Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to counter each type of incoming attack in God of War: Ragnarok.
The combat mechanics of God of War has received an overhaul since its 2018 reboot, God of War 4. Instead of purely relying on mindless button mashing, players now have to carefully block, parry, and dodge to win battles against mythical creatures and gods alike.

In God of War: Ragnarok, a colored ring appears right before the enemy attacks. The color of the ring indicates what attack they will perform, allowing you to make a better judgment on whether to block, parry, or dodge the attack.
Of course, not all attacks can be evaded, or countered. However, by understanding what each of the colored rings represents, you will have an easier time taking down tougher opponents without incurring much damage. Moreover, understanding what each colored ring means will also help you survive the hardest hits from enemies.
There are three colored rings you’ll see in God of War: Ragnarok. They are Yellow, Red, and Blue. This guide will explain what each of these rings means and what moves to perform when you see them.
How To Counter Yellow, Red, and Blue Ring Attacks in God of War: Ragnarok
The colors of each attack ring not only represent the attack’s strength but also indicates whether or not you can parry and counter it. Below are all the ways you can counter each attack.
Yellow Ring Attack
These indicate slightly weaker attacks that can be blocked or parried using a Shield. To counter a Yellow Ring attack, hit the L1 button at the right time and perform your desired attack. By pressing the L1 button exactly at the last second, you’ll hear the sound of a Gong, which indicates a perfect parry.
Having said that, missing your timing will cause the attack to land and shave off a good chunk of your health. Since you can counter Yellow Ring attacks with shields, it is wise to use shields with bonus effects like the Dauntless Shield.
The Dauntless Shield can stun enemies upon impact and boosts the impact of your next Shield Bash. Once stunned, you can unleash a deadly attack with your Leviathan Axe or the Blades of Chaos.
Moreover, you can block off the incoming attack entirely by wielding heavier shields like the Stone Wall Shield. However, the enemy will break your guard if you can’t successfully parry their Yellow ring attacks. Not only that, if you only block a Yellow ring attack without parrying it, then you’ll be stunned instead.
Red Ring Attack
The color Red is often associated with danger, and that applies to God of War: Ragnarok as well. The Red Ring attacks performed by strong opponents are completely unblockable. That’s why the best way to avoid getting hit is by dodging and evading the attack.
You can perform a dodge-roll against attacks by double tapping the X button. On the other hand, you can evade an attack by pressing the X button once while moving.
Having said that, there are a few instances where these seemingly unblockable attacks can be interrupted. Although the opportunity won’t always present itself, you might be able to interrupt a Red Ring attack by performing a well-timed Spartan Rage burst with the L3 and R3 buttons.
Blue Ring Attack
Blue Ring attacks are somewhat unique. As they cannot be directly blocked or parried but can be interrupted instead. These special attacks appear as double-blue rings. The Blue Ring attacks in God of War: Ragnarok can be interrupted with a Shield Bash.
To perform a Shield Bash, press the L1 button twice before the attack lands. Doing so successfully will break the enemy’s guard and give you an opening to unleash a deadly attack yourself. This is the best way of countering strong enemies with seemingly unbreakable defense.
