It is becoming increasingly likely that Riot will potentially remove the Mythic Item System in Preseason 2024 of League of Legends.
Mythic Items have had quite the adventure in Season 13 of League of Legends. We have seen so many changes on these tiers of items. The start of the season saw many items being introduced, like Radiant Virtue.
However, Riot has changed how many of those items work over time. We had the massive item reworks in the middle of the season with so many changes. ADC items became hybridized, and Riot added more options to building items.
Duskblade of Draktharr, Guinsoo’s Rageblade, and Statikk Shiv have been the biggest items since those changes. Even in Patch 13.17, two out of three items are getting nerfs or adjustments. This just points to the fact that Riot is still struggling with item balance.
In the midseason, they mentioned that this was going to be the last-ditch effort to see what the Mythic system could do. So, they changed the ADC and Assassin items for the most part to test it out.
Since then, we have heard from several people at Riot about their unhappiness with the Mythic system. So, we could see the system being reworked this preseason. Let’s jump right into it.

Riot’s Opinion On The Mythic Item System
Mythic Items has had its fair share of problems. Riot has already made their intentions clear on what they are thinking about the system. The sweeping changes say a lot, as mentioned above. However, as time has passed, it seems big changes are on the horizon.
Riot Phroxzon has since gone on a podcast, Broken By Concept, and talked about Mythic items about a month ago. Video is at the bottom with the timestamp where Riot Phroxzon talks about Mythic items.
There, he talks about how they envisioned Mythic items to be and how they turned out. While the idea was solid, even Riot Phroxzon acknowledges that the system was implemented poorly. His analysis of the situation is great to hear as he also talks about how the system could have worked and such.
Riot Phroxzon speculated about how the Mythic Item System could have worked, like having more Mythics for each champion and such. That is a huge undertaking, and it would make the game too complex.
Mythic Items are neither unique nor do they give the wow factor. Riot Phroxzon says it as much as the current system does not address the needs of a lot of champions in the game.
So, this makes it pretty clear that Riot is not really into the current Mythic item system. However, in the same podcast, Riot Phroxzon talked about how the ADC Mythic changes were partly due to them testing out the system’s future.
Riot Meddler chimed in on this, talking about how the next dev update could talk about it with a deeper dive later.
This Reddit Post talks a lot about what players think the item system could be and such. However, the key detail is that Riot knows this is a problem, and they will address it soon enough. The Preseason could be pretty big.
Will Riot Remove The Mythic Item System?
Given the opinions of two of the prominent members of Riot’s team for League of Legends, we could very well be seeing the removal of the Mythic Item System. However, there is one thing that gives it pause.
For one, the fact that the ADC Mythic Rework worked could change things. So, instead of removing the Mythic Item System, we could see another version of it in 2024. Something that is akin to what they do with the ADC items.
It will be a tall order to either replace the system or reinvent it. So, it will be interesting to see how that goes on. We should know more about it officially soon, as Riot Meddler said, when the next Dev Update video comes out.
