Don’t let your adventures across the galaxy deprive you of finding love. Here are all the people you can romance in Starfield and how to win them over.
After 25 long years, Bethesda has finally brought us an entirely new universe to dive into. The story-rich, open-world RPG of Starfield will take you across the Milky Way in search of lost artifacts that are scattered throughout the galaxy.
During your epic journey of becoming the Starborn, you will cross paths with other spacefarers like you. Getting to know them and learning their story will eventually lead to an unbreakable companionship.
Since the game is centered around space travel, you will naturally be able to recruit crewmates to help you run your spaceship. However, not all of them will share meaningful bonds with you. So, your relationship with them won’t progress any further than being acquaintances who travel together.
That’s why the option to romance someone you meet in Starfield is reserved for only those NPCs that have a meaningful contribution to the game’s main storyline. If you’re wondering how Starfield’s romance mechanism works and whom you can start a romantic relationship with, then we’ve got you covered.
Starfield Romance Mechanism Explained
The world of Starfield is huge, considering you can visit and explore over 1,000 planets. While not all of them are inhabited by people, you will stumble upon at least a few significant human settlements.
Some of the characters you meet during your travels will stand out from others since they bring their own set of quests to do. If you get to know them well enough and raise your affinity, they will also join you in your travels, not only as a crewmate but also as an active follower.
However, the option of assigning them to an outpost or ship or having them tag along on foot will only unlock once you’ve completed their required main mission.
That said, your success in romancing a companion depends on how well you express romantic interest in them. Since our silent protagonist can only interact with other characters through the dialogue options we pick, it is up to us whether we want a character to take the hint or not.
During certain conversations, the prompt to [Flirt] will appear. Choosing to flirt appropriately will help raise your affinity to a point that transcends platonic friendship. Moreover, you must also complete their companion quests and listen to their requests when they seek your help.
Furthermore, you will need to strike up conversations whenever the prompt appears and keep them close by adding them to your crew to deepen their fondness for you gradually. In addition to that, you can also get married once you’ve formed a special relationship with them.
All Romance Options in Starfield
There are 4 Companions that you can romance in Starfield. Here’s how to romance all of them:
Sarah Morgan
Voiced by Emily O’Brien, Sarah is the headstrong leader of the Constellation Faction. Since her faction’s primary goal is to uncover the mysteries of the universe and track down lost artifacts, the easiest way to win her favor is by praising the group’s work and being open-minded toward space exploration.
Moreover, Sarah is also a stickler for rules and will favor those who put honesty and integrity above all else. That’s why engaging in illegal acts like smuggling or using underhanded tactics to deceive someone will put her off and potentially lock you out of romance.
As mentioned earlier, the first step to romancing a Companion is by flirting with them whenever you get the chance. Since you need to see through the end of Constellation questline anyway, you need to pick the following dialogue choices when you speak to her outside of Sona’s Hab, Colony War Memorial, and Waterfall Promenade in New Atlantis:
- “[Flirt] I’m hoping there’s much more than simple gratitude tucked away in that statement.”
- “[Flirt] I only say these things because I care about you, Sarah.”
- “[Romance] I’m saying I love you, Sarah. Now and Forever.”
- “[Commitment] I’d like to spend our future together, forever.”
Once the two of you form a romantic relationship, Sarah’s Commitment quest will open up, and the two of you can get married in a close-knit ceremony.
Andreja
Voiced by Cissy Jones, Andreja is an Astronomer, Navigator, and a member of the Constellation faction. However, much of the details of her origins are shrouded in mystery. Although she doesn’t share much about her life before joining Constellation, she does open up about the difficulties of surviving alone.
Andreja’s life struggles have made her thick-skinned. So, unlike most companions in Starfield, she won’t pay heed to you resorting to intimidation, smuggling, and other acts of dishonesty to fulfill your objectives.
That said, she doesn’t condone unnecessary acts of cruelty. That’s why it’s best not to harm innocent people with her around, especially if you’re trying to get her to fall in love with you.
To win Andreja over, you must complete her questline and flirt with her whenever the prompt shows up. It is important to note that it is possible to romance her even if you convince her to spare Tomisar.
You must pick the following dialogue choices when you speak to Andreja in her room at the Lodge in New Atlantis:
- “Whatever happens next, we’ll face it together.”
- “You don’t need House Va’ruun. You have a family in Constellation.”
- “[Romance] I’ll always be here for you. I love you.”
- “I’m all yours for as long as you want me.”
- “[Commitment] I think it’s time we make it official.”
Finally, you can make Andreja your wife by completing her commitment quest.
Sam Coe
Voiced by Elias Toufexis, Sam Coe is a pilot and a member of the Freestar Collective. But that’s not all he is. Sam is also the Coe family’s heir, who are Akila City’s founders. However, when it comes to family, his daughter Cora is who matters most to him.
While on the subject of family, Sam does not like to be treated differently due to his heritage. Living on the frontier has helped him find his own identity and allowed him to aid people on a personal level. That’s why he always puts justice above all else and won’t mind bending the law if it’s to help someone.
However, it is important to note that our space cowboy is married. So, your pursuit of romance will make you a homewrecker to his wife. And if your character is male, then you’re essentially bringing Brokeback Mountain to space.
That said, if you still want to romance him, you’ll have to let him open up about his family to you and maintain a good relationship with Cora. Moreover, doing sidequests to help people will also allow you to win his favor. Furthermore, you will have to complete his questline and continue flirting with him whenever the prompt appears.
Once you complete the Matters of the Hart quest, Sam will ask you to meet him near Solomon Coe’s statue in Akila City. Pick the following choices when you speak to him:
- “So you were a vandal even from a young age.”
- “If you need any more support, I’m here.”
- “[Flirt] We’re both the lucky ones. Lucky to find each other.”
- “[Romance] As soon as we met, I knew you were the one for me. I love you, Sam.”
- “Yes, I want it. All of it.”
Once you complete Sam’s Commitment quest and receive Cora’s blessings, the two of you can get married, with Elias officiating the ceremony.
Barrett
Voiced by Barry Wiggins, Barrett is an engineer and a member of the Constellation. He’s also the first member that you’ll encounter from that faction, and you’ll have to rescue him before he can join your squad.
Barrett is always full of energy and loves to goof around and crack dad jokes. His good vibes are contagious, and it is practically impossible to dislike him as a person.
Moreover, his skills as an engineer make him an extremely capable companion. But he’s also highly intrigued about all the wonders of the universe and wants to rush out on adventures.
However, he is still mourning the loss of his husband, Ervin, and is on a mission to find out what really happened to him. So, in order to win Barrett’s favor, you must sympathize with him whenever he brings up Ervin in conversations and be there for him.
The only way to help Barrett move on is by helping him with his investigation of Ervin’s death. So, you must complete the Breach of Contract Companion quest. During the investigation, you must scout the following places to gather all the evidence:
- Ervin’s apartment
- Town Hall
- Hephaestus mine
Other than helping him with the investigation, you can try to get Barrett to develop feelings for you by cracking jokes with him, responding with “yes and” to follow up on his improvs. Moreover, as with every other companion, you must also pick the [Flirt] option whenever the prompt appears.
This will eventually open up the [Romance] dialogue options, leading up to [Commitment], allowing you to marry him.
