Gunpowder is one of those resources in Windrose that feels simple at first, but quickly becomes a major bottleneck once you start relying on guns. The game gives you firearms fairly early, but keeping them useful is a different story. If you want to keep shooting instead of going back to melee every few fights, you need to know where to loot Gunpowder, when crafting becomes available, and what materials you need to make it yourself.

What Is Gunpowder Used for in Windrose?

Gunpowder is mainly used with firearms in Windrose. You can have bullets ready, but your gun still will not fire properly if you do not have Gunpowder to go with them. Players need both bullets and Gunpowder to actually make guns work, which makes it one of the more important combat resources once you start playing around with ranged weapons.

That is also why Gunpowder feels scarce early on. Windrose does not want you to instantly turn every fight into a shooting gallery. You have to earn a steady supply through exploration first, then unlock crafting later once you have reached the right stage of progression.

How To Find Gunpowder Early in Windrose

The easiest way to get Gunpowder early in Windrose is by looting pirate camps, chests, supply caches, and points of interest across the islands. Early Gunpowder is mostly found by exploring islands, uncovering points of interest, and opening chests, though loot can be randomized, so you should not expect the same container to always give the same reward.

This makes pirate camps your best early target. Also, gunpowder is commonly found inside chests or supply caches, especially around Blackbeard pirate camps. Since the main questline sends you through several of these areas, you should loot everything before leaving.

If you are still in the early game, do not waste Gunpowder on easy enemies. Use melee weapons for basic fights and save your shots for tougher enemies, bosses, or situations where keeping distance actually matters.

Can You Craft Gunpowder in Windrose?

Yes, you can craft Gunpowder in Windrose, but not right away. Crafting it is tied to later progression, especially the Foothills region and the Millstone workstation.

To craft gunpowder, you need Sulfur, Ash, and a Millstone to make Gunpowder, and that crafting is gated behind the main quest Revenge is Best Served Cold. You also need an Iron Pickaxe to mine Sulfur, which means you will need to progress past the earliest island content before crafting becomes realistic.

You need to reach the Foothills and unlock the Millstones workstation before you can craft Gunpowder. This happens after finding Corn in the Foothills, which unlocks Millstone Parts at the Workbench.

How To Unlock the Millstone

To craft Gunpowder, you first need access to the Millstone. Millstones are crafted using Millstone Parts and Wood, with Millstone Parts made from Stone at the Workbench. Once the Millstone is built, it becomes the crafting station used for making Gunpowder.

This is why players often feel stuck even after finding Ash or Sulfur. Having the ingredients is not enough. You need the right workstation unlocked and placed at your base before Gunpowder crafting becomes available.

Gunpowder Crafting Recipe in Windrose

The commonly listed in-game recipe for Gunpowder is 10 Sulfur and 20 Ash at a Millstone. Also note that Sulfur requires an Iron Pickaxe, and Ash is usually obtained while producing Charcoal.

Ash is the easier material to stockpile. It comes naturally as a byproduct when you burn Wood in a Charcoal Kiln. Since Charcoal is already important for smelting, you will likely gather Ash without going too far out of your way.

Sulfur is the harder part. It becomes available after you reach the Foothills, gather Iron, craft an Iron Pickaxe, and then mine Sulfur deposits with that upgraded tool.

Where To Get Sulfur in Windrose?

Sulfur is found in the Foothills region, usually in yellowish rock deposits or nodes across rocky areas. Sulfur deposits are yellow-marbled rocks found around the Foothills, and you will need an Iron Pickaxe to mine them.

Before going on a Sulfur run, make sure your Iron Pickaxe is ready and bring enough space in your inventory. If you are planning to craft a lot of Gunpowder, Sulfur will probably be the material that slows you down the most.

Where To Get Ash in Windrose?

Ash is much easier to gather because it is tied to Charcoal production. It is created when making Charcoal, and by the time you are ready to craft Gunpowder, you may already have a large amount sitting in storage.

Also, ash can be obtained from Charcoal production, and you can also turn Charcoal into Ash at the Millstone if needed. However, Charcoal is useful for smelting, so it is usually better to save that method for moments when you really need extra Ash quickly.

Best Way To Farm Gunpowder

The best early farming method is to clear pirate camps and loot every chest, crate, and supply cache you find. This gives you enough Gunpowder to use guns occasionally while you are still progressing toward the Foothills.

Once you unlock the Foothills, the better long-term method is crafting. Build a Millstone, keep your Charcoal Kiln running for Ash, then mine Sulfur with an Iron Pickaxe. After that, you can start producing Gunpowder more consistently instead of hoping chest loot goes your way.

To get Gunpowder in Windrose, start by looting pirate camps, chests, supply caches, and points of interest during the early game. Once you progress far enough into the Foothills, unlock the Millstone, gather Ash from Charcoal production, mine Sulfur with an Iron Pickaxe, and craft Gunpowder at your base.

Gunpowder is not something you should waste early. Save it for tougher fights, keep looting every pirate camp you clear, and build toward crafting as soon as the Foothills open up. Once your Millstone is running and you have a steady Sulfur route, guns become much easier to use without constantly running dry.
