Sony has found itself at the center of another PlayStation ownership debate after users began receiving lengthy emails containing copies of the platform’s Terms of Service, Code of Conduct, End User License Agreement, and Privacy Policy. The emails arrive at an awkward moment, with players already criticizing Sony’s decision to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028.

In brief

  • PlayStation users are receiving emails containing Sony’s terms and digital licensing rules.
  • The terms reiterate that PlayStation software is “licensed to you, not sold.”
  • Sony’s move away from new physical game discs in 2028 has intensified concerns about digital ownership.
  • The emails arrive as the #PSBlackout protest runs from August 23 to August 30.

PlayStation Terms Highlight the Limits of Digital Ownership

One section getting particular attention is Sony’s Software EULA. It states that software is licensed rather than sold and gives players a limited, personal, non-transferable license for private, non-commercial use. Even though this is not a newly introduced policy, seeing it spelled out directly has renewed concerns about what buying a digital game actually means.

Sony’s terms also explain that accounts can be suspended or terminated for violations. A suspended account can lose access to PlayStation features, and some products or services players have paid for, while console suspensions can prevent access to PlayStation Store purchases.

The terms also state that Sony may track or record activity on PlayStation Online Services. Depending on the region, collected information can include voice and text communications, gameplay videos, online IDs, locations, and IP addresses.

Another clause in Sony’s European terms limits the company’s liability in certain cases to £100 or the value of unused PlayStation Store Wallet funds, whichever is higher.

Sony’s Timing Fuels the PlayStation Backlash

The licensing language itself is not new, but the timing has attracted criticism. Sony announced in July that physical disc production for all new PlayStation releases will stop starting in January 2028. Games released on disc before that cutoff will remain unaffected.

So, that decision has already triggered a larger debate around preservation, resale, account dependence, and whether digital purchases provide enough consumer protection.

Now, the emails are arriving alongside the #PSBlackout campaign, which calls on players to avoid playing, purchasing games, and engaging with PlayStation services from August 23 through August 30 in protest of Sony’s physical media plans.
