A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II will no longer be released after its creator says he received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking him not to launch the project.
Modder Speclizer had been developing the ambitious PC multiplayer mod since January 2026, with plans to release it sometime in September. However, those plans have now been abandoned following Sony’s reported intervention.
In brief:
- The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mod was scheduled to release in September 2026.
- Creator Speclizer says he received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the mod not be released.
- Development had progressed to functional 4v4 matches, matchmaking, loadouts, maps, and leaderboards.
- Speclizer has now cancelled the project and says his next project will be something of his own.
Sony Requests The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod Not Be Released

Speclizer announced the news on X, confirming that the project will not see a public release.
According to the creator, the multiplayer mod had been in development since January and was supposed to launch this month. He said he recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the mod not be released.
Speclizer described the situation as “extremely sad,” but thanked fans for supporting the project over the past year. He also confirmed that he plans to move on to a new original project, which he hopes will be “bigger and better.”
The exact contents of the letter have not been made public.
The Mod Had Already Made Significant Progress

This was far more than an early multiplayer experiment. By July, Speclizer had managed to get matches with up to eight players working, allowing full 4v4 games after previously being limited to 1v1 matches.
The project also featured a multiplayer menu, matchmaking system, gear loadouts, a functioning leaderboard, and multiple playable maps based on environments from The Last of Us Part II.
Its cancellation will likely be particularly disappointing for fans because Naughty Dog previously stopped development of its own standalone The Last of Us Online project in December 2023. The studio said supporting the game’s post-launch content would have required so many resources that Naughty Dog would effectively have needed to become focused primarily on live-service development.
