Gargoyle’s Stoneplate, Archangel’s Staff, and Seraph’s Embrace reworks are getting their changes reverted.
League of Legends Preseason 2023 is coming soon. We had Patch 12.21 land very recently in the live servers as the Balance Team is focused on getting the Preseason update ready. In the upcoming Preseason Patch, we are expected to have a lot of changes introduced to the game.
Many of the updates are related to Chemtech being reintroduced to the game, jungle changes, ping system changes, etc. The Preseason also brings in new items like Heartsteel, Jak’sho, The Protean, etc.
The preseason update will also introduce a bevy of reworks on items. Gargoyle Stoneplate, Archangel’s Staff, and Seraph’s Embrace were among those items set for a rework. However, as Riot is testing all the upcoming changes, they have decided to revert the reworks of the three items mentioned. Here is what we know about that.

Gargoyle Stoneplate Revert
As it stood in the PBE cycle, Gargoyle Stoneplate was set to receive the following changes.
- Total cost increased from 3200 gold to 3600 gold.
- The recipe changed from Cloth Armor + Aegis of the Legion + Null-Magic Mantle to Chain Vest + Aegis of the Legion + Negatron Cloak.
- Shield duration increased from 2.5 seconds to 3
- The shield will now decay after 1 second.
- Armor and Magic Resist increased from 60 to 80.
However, in the recent PBE cycle, Riot has reverted the changes back to the live server version barring the cost change. Here is Spideraxe’s tweet for verification.
So far, Riot reverting the changes has gotten mixed feelings from players. Some players are fine with Riot reverting them, while others are angry at Riot dropping the ball.
It was probably due to the item being much stronger than anticipated, and the Balance Team has gone back to the drawing board to fix the situation and reverted it back for now. We still have a while until the Preseason update land.
Archangel’s Staff and Seraph’s Embrace Reverts
Both Archangel’s Staff and Seraph’s Embrace were set to receive changes as follows.
Archangel’s Staff Proposed Changes
- Ability Power Increased By 40 (from 60 AP to 100 AP)
- Health Removed From Item
- 10 Ability Haste Added
- Awe passive ability changed from “Gaining Ability Haste equal to 0.5% bonus Mana” to “Gaining Ability Power equal to 1% bonus Mana.”
- Item Build Path changed to Tear + Fiendish Codex + Needlessly Large Rod from Tear + Kindlegem + Blasting Wand.
- Cost increased to a total of 3000 gold.
Seraph’s Embrace Proposed Changes
- Ability Power Increased By 40 (from 60 AP to 100 AP)
- Health Removed From Item
- 10 Ability Haste Added
- Awe passive ability changed from “Gaining Ability Haste equal to 1.3% bonus Mana” to “Gaining Ability Power equal to 3% bonus Mana.”
- Empyrean passive ability changed to “Dealing ability damage to an enemy champion grants you 3 Ability Haste for 5 seconds, up to 5 times.
Riot Reverting Proposed Changes
Both the changes for the items mentioned above are being reverted in PBE. This has drawn a lot of negative comments from players on social media. Here is Spideraxe’s tweet regarding the revert.
The current iteration of Archangel’s Staff and Seraph’s Embrace gives Ability Haste and is a very unpopular item. The proposed iteration was also not doing what it was intended, as many players have said that the item was given a lot of damage reduction but not that much AP. So the reversion sounds like the Balance Team is pulling it to get some more work done before changing the items.
In Conclusion
All in all, all three items have been reverted, barring the cost of Gargoyle Stoneplate. This signals that the balance team is returning to the drawing board for these items to change the items again functionally. We will have to wait and see what they come up with for the future of these items.
