Riot Games have finally released the in-client meta game Tournament of Souls. Here’s how you can play it.

Every summer, Riot releases a massive event for League of Legends. And this summer is no exception.

Usually, during these events, Riot releases many new contents. These contents include many new champion skins, a new game mode, an event pass, and a metagame.

Meta-games are in-client activities or mini-games that players could play to earn some more bonus rewards. Last year, we got the Star Guardian 2022 event. It included a ton of new skins, ultimate spellbook game mode, and Riot added a visual novel for the metagame. In the Star Guardian visual novel, players could meet and interact with various Star Guardian champions.

While the visual novel offered new lore-related content and rewards, players were unhappy with it. The main reason is that we received visual novels during these kinds of summer events in the years prior. Although the visual novel-style games were interesting initially, like in the Spirit Blossom 2019 event, they became oversaturated as time progressed.

So for this year’s event, Riot has scrapped the visual novel-style game in favor of a fighting game-style mode. Additionally, this new metagame is called Tournament of Souls. Here’s everything you have to know about it.

League of Legends: Tournament Of Souls

Tournament of Souls is the newest metagame, coming to the game alongside the Soul Fighter event. In this mode, you will follow the story of Soul Fighter Samira. Moreover, you will be able to fight other Soul Fighter champions in this mode as well. Even though this story does contain slight visual novel concepts, they are entirely linear and are not the main focus.

Samira’s Controls

We will play as Samira in a 1v1 format against other Soul Fighters in this game mode. But the overall mode is different than League of Legends. So here is the default control scheme.

  • Q – Gun Ability
  • W – 1st/Sword Ability
  • E – 2nd/Sword Ability
  • R – Neutral

Samira’s Ability

As shown in the control section, Samira is going to have 4 different abilities at once. But you can choose what kind of gun or sword ability you want. Here are all the options.

Q – Gun Abilities

  • Quickshot – Fire a fast shot for 160 damage. When used to change weapons, fires twice.
  • Piercing Precision – 3 piercing shots for a total of 210 damage that break shields and increases the duration of airborne.
  • Deadshot – Puncturing shot that deals 70 damage and causes bleeding for 160 damage over 4s. If already bleeding, the initial shot deals 4x damage.

W – 1st/Sword Abilities

  • Sky Scraper – Upward slash for 230 damage that sends the enemy airborne.
  • Back Atcha – Spin twice for 60 damage, blocking all damage and status effects while reflecting a max of 500 damage back to an opponent for 1s. If Samira blocks 300 damage or greater, gain one additional style point.
  • Blade Drain – Slice twice for 175 damage, healing 250 total. If the enemy is wounded, heal double.

E – 2nd/Sword Abilities

  • Severe Strike – Stab forward for 265 damage inflicting wounded for 4s. If the enemy is bleeding, refresh the bleeding duration.
  • Twilight Rush – Dash forward for 100 damage, breaking shields, and place a sticky bomb that explodes for 130, damaging all enemies after 2s. Following with a gun, the ability detonates early, causing the grenade to critically strike.
  • Style on’ Em – Slash rapidly, dealing 230 damage, and gain one additional style point. If the enemy is airborne, deal 50% bonus damage.

R – Neutral

  • Chaotic Daybreak – Increase crit chance from 25% to 75% for 10s, and unleash a torrent of shots for 700 damage.
  • Immortal Inferno – Unleash a torrent of shots for 550 damage, healing 500.

Status Effects

Similarly to League of Legends, this mode also has a status effect. Additionally, both Samira and her opponent can inflict them. Here is a basic rundown of all the status effects so you can win your matches easily.

  • Resist
    Champions take reduced incoming damage.
  • Crit Up
Increases the champion’s critical hit chance.
  • Airborne
Champions are knocked into the sky and unable to use abilities for a set time.
  • Bleeding
    Champions take damage over time.
  • Stunned
Champions cannot attack or take any actions
  • Unstoppable
    Champion’s abilities cannot be interrupted.
  • Siphoned
A portion of the champion’s health is stolen and can only be recovered by dealing damage. If stolen health is not recovered in time, Samira takes damage equal to the amount of stolen health, and the debuff ends.
  • Wounded
    The champion’s healing is reduced.
  • FATAL
Marked for death—will be executed the next time an Ultimate ability damages them.

Reputation and Rewards

Reputation

There is a new type of resource in this mode called reputation. Through reputation, you can move on to the next fighter. Without enough reputation, you cannot challenge the next Soul Fighter. But you don’t have to worry, as you can complete Soul Fighter missions to earn more reputation points.

Rewards

There are two modes in this meta-game, Story Mode and Expert Mode. Each of them offers a unique set of rewards. Here are all of them.
