Riot has finally revealed the upcoming highly anticipated game mode, Arena. Here’s everything you have to know about it.
There are currently 2 main game modes in League of Legends. They are Summoner’s Rift and ARAM (Howling Abyss). Even though other limited-time game modes appear occasionally, these limited modes are very simple in concept and take place in Summoner’s Rift.
There used to be other game modes that took place on different maps. Some prominent ones are Twisted Treeline, Dominion, and Nexus Blitz. Twisted Treeline and Dominion were removed as they had very few active players and a botting problem. And Nexus Blitz, on the other hand, wasn’t permanently removed. But Riot refuses to bring back this game mode as it breaks the interface and other parts of the main game. Moreover, after the release of Teamfight Tactics, Riot did not reveal any information about upcoming game modes, let alone release one.
But earlier this year, Riot confirmed they were working on a new game mode. It would be 2v2v2v2 and will take place on a different map. Besides that, the only other information they revealed was that this game mode would release during the huge summer event.
Recently, Riot finally revealed the massive summer 2023 event, Soul Fighter. This event will add many contents to the game. Some of the notable ones are new skins, an upcoming ultimate skin, a new “metagame” replacing the visual novels, and for the current topic, a new game mode called Arena.

League of Legends Game Mode: Arena
Arena is the upcoming game mode in League of Legends. It will be a mix of Teamfight Tactics and League of Legends, focusing on 2v2 combat. Additionally, this mode will feature new maps. Like Teamfight Tactics, this game mode will take place in rounds. In each round, two teams will be picked to fight against each other. The losing team will have a reduction in their points. Once that team reaches 0 points, they are disqualified. And it will continue till there is only one team remaining.
This mode will feature picks and bans similar to draft mode. However, the pick phase will be completely blind, meaning you cannot see the enemies’ champions and vice versa. So it is possible to have a mirrored matchup.
Additionally, runes will be disabled in this game mode and be replaced by augments. Moreover, many summoner’s spells will be turned off in this mode, but some popular ones, like Flash, will still remain. We are getting a new summoner’s spell in this mode called Flee. It is similar to the Ghost spell but can be upgraded or replaced with augments.
Augments
As stated before, runes are being replaced by augments. Augments are unique buffs and abilities that players can choose in certain buy phases. These could range from simple AD or AP ratio buff to complete game-breaking mechanics like blinking you around the map and more.
There are currently 98 different augments in the game. Additionally, there are separated into three tiers, Silver, Gold, and Prismatic. Silvers are the least surprising, while Prismatic is the most influential.
Cameos
To add round-to-round variance, Riot is adding something called Cameos. A new champion might appear to spice up the match in some rounds. There are 10 different cameos based on different Soul Fighter skins.
For example, Naafiri will roam around the map in a circle. If she spots you, then she will dash to you and damage you. Similarly, other cameos will be unique as well.
Ranked System
There will be a ranked system in this mode. Here is the list of all of the names,
- Wood
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Gladiator
You will gain points and rank up if you are top two in the match. However, if you are in the bottom two, you will lose points and derank.
Arena Game Mode Release Date
This game mode will hit live servers on League of Legends alongside the Soul Fighter event on patch 13.14, scheduled to release on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
