Riot will slightly rework a popular AP item, Cosmic Drive, in the upcoming patch 13.8.

Since preseason 2023, Riot has been determined to update most existing items in League of Legends. At the start of the season, they reworked Ravenous Hydra, which completely ruined ranked matches. But they did nerf it to the point it’s back to its original state.

Besides that, Riot also changed many other items like Archangel’s Staff, Radiant Virtue, Demonic Embrace, etc. Though some of the item changes made underperforming champions as Ryze overpowered, these changes, for the most part, were welcome inclusion.

One of the items they changed not too long ago was Cosmic Drive. It is originally was supposed to be more damage and movement-centric AP item. However, it was very underutilized as other items gave better value. So Riot adjusted Cosmic Drive in patch 13.5. In that patch, they removed its bonus health, increased the AP from 65 to 90, and changed the build path.

Though this new Cosmic Drive was strong on certain champions, it was not a good purchase for most mages overall. The reason for that was the high cooldown on their abilities. Because of it, Riot will rework Cosmic Drive’s passive in patch 13.8.

Cosmic Drive Changes Patch 13.8

  • Ability Power: 90 >>> 100
  • New passive: Dealing damage generates a stack of 2.5% MS every 1.5 seconds for the next 5 seconds, up to 10% at 4 stacks. At max stacks, gain an additional 10% MS (20% total)

Riot Phroxzon later clarified and gave more insight into the Cosmic Drive changes.

The previous passive of this item was called Spelldance. After dealing damage from 3 instances, the user would gain 15% movement speed which will decay over 2 seconds. Moreover, that player would also gain 40 AP for 5 seconds during that time.

However, the problem with most mages is their cooldown. Though mages’ damage is very significant, they are considerably squishy, and their ability has a very high cooldown. Because of the high cooldown, they cannot correctly utilize Cosmic Drive’s passive.

Because of it, the newer passive grants more movement speed. When using Cosmic Drive now, each damage dealt will grant stacks to the player. After a certain stack, they will gain bonus movement speed.

Most mages will be able to gain the benefit from this new passive. Mages with little mobility, like Vex, should feel right at home with these changes. However, like Leblanc, mages with already high mobility might get far more overpowered by these changes.

Release Date

These Comsic Drive changes should hit live servers on patch 13.8, scheduled to release on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.
