Should you try to Defeat the Frost or Embrace the Frost in the 2nd Chapter of Frostpunk 2?

You’ll have to make important and tough choices throughout Frostpunk 2. These choices will affect everything from resource management to your standing with certain factions.

Moreover, these choices can significantly impact your playthrough experience.

In Chapter 1, you were tasked with finding a permanent source of Oil. In Chapter 2, you will have to decide what to do with that oil, and how your city will progress from then onwards.

You can align yourself with the Stalwarts to fight the Frost, or with the Pilgrims to embrace the Frost. Each choice will correlate with one of the two main ideologies of Frostpunk 2, Progress or Adaptation.

In this article, we’ll look at the consequences of each decision, and how you’ll need to change your city to pursue each objective.

Defeat the Frost

If you choose to defeat the Frost, you will have several tasks that you’ll need to complete.

Oil-Pumps

You’ll need to transition New London’s Generator’s fuel source to Oil exclusively, by upgrading it with Oil Pumps. This improves the generator’s efficiency in processing oil to generate heat but also increases squalor.

You will also need to Research and Construct Surplus Injectors. This will allow the Generator to burn excess Oil and increase Heat output. Surplus Injectors can be researched under Generator Upgrade II in the Heating tab of the Idea Tree, and cost 4 Cores to construct.

Cores can only be found by sending Frostland Teams to explore the Frostland.

Next, you’ll need to Activate the Surplus Injectors and supply enough Oil to reach Heat Surplus. You can do this by increasing the oil output from the Old Dreadnought to New London. This will give you enough Heat to survive the upcoming whiteout.

Going this route will also keep the Stalwarts happy, but the Pilgrims will disapprove of this decision.

Moreover, this route will give you access to the Deep Melting Drill, which will make getting resources significantly easier. This drill will allow you to construct Extraction Districts over certain deposits in New England, which have almost unlimited resources.

This route also results in a more linear playthrough, as your focus will be complete on New London, and you’ll get all your required resources from one place.

Embrace the Frost

If you decide to Embrace the Frost, you’ll spend the rest of Chapter 2 focusing on building Settlements in the Frostland. You’ll need to complete the following tasks:

Adaptive-Pumps

First, you’ll have to upgrade New London’s Generator with Adaptive Pumps, so that it can process Coal and Steam.

Next, you’ll need to research Settlement Heating and Skyways under the Heating tab and the Frostland tab of the Idea Tree respectively.

Settlement Heating will turn Outposts into Settlements that provide unlimited resources, and Skyways will allow you to transport more resources from Settlements, Colonies, and Outposts.

Now, you can find Outposts in the Frostland to turn into Settlements. Two can be found just north of New London. One is a Coal source, while the other increases Stockpile limits.

Lastly, you’ll need to upgrade your Settlement by selecting Expand Operations, boosting its output and population. This will increase the settlement’s population to 2,000 and also make it resistant to Whiteouts, allowing it to ship resources to New London during Whiteouts.

Choosing this route will keep the Pilgrims happy, but Stalwart will disapprove.

This route also results in a more dynamic playthrough, as you’ll have to explore Frostland to find outposts with different resources.
