Massive surrender changes are coming to League of Legends patch 13.21.

Since earlier this year, Riot has been changing a lot of core mechanics and quality-of-life features to make the game more fluid. For example, they have added more pings, changed a lot of champion interactions, auto-mute, ranked penalties, and, for today’s topic, surrender changes.

Surrender is a core part of online competitive gaming. Especially in ranked games where leaving is technically not allowed, surrendering is the only way to end the match quickly. People would want to end a match fast because they know they would lose, so they don’t want to waste more time.

In League of Legends, before the last surrender changes, if you wanted to surrender in a ranked match, then 5 people in your team unanimously had to agree on surrendering. But at the time, there would be one troll who would keep the game hostage and would never surrender.

Moreover, Riot mentioned that 97% of the early failed surrender vote games are lost in ranked. This prompted Riot to make some changes to this system. They ended up making changes where 4 players minimum have to agree on surrendering instead of 5. Now, in the upcoming change Riot is making, players don’t have to be unanimous in the early AFK surrender stage as well.

League of Legends Patch 13.21: Early AFK Surrender Changes

In a usual League of Legends match, players can not forfeit before 15 minutes. However, if a player goes AFK before that period, they will be given the option to surrender early.

Before, the remaining players on your team unanimously have to agree on surrendering if you want to forfeit early. But with the upcoming changes, players can still end the game early even if the vote isn’t unanimous.

This change has both pros and cons. For the benefits, as there is an AFK player in your team, your LP won’t be reduced as much as before. Moreover, you can easily leave the losing match. But for the cons, people might otherwise surrender out of the match which they could easily win. Regardless, we have to wait and see how these changes would affect the wider community.
