Keep reading to get a complete breakdown of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s ending. Beware: Major Spoilers ahead!
When Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was first announced, fans worldwide could not wait to dive into Link’s latest adventure. Being a direct sequel to the highly successful Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom had major expectations to live up to. And it surely didn’t disappoint.
Unlike its predecessor, Tears of the Kingdom focuses on providing a much more streamlined main storyline. The story starts off with Zelda and Link learning about the history of Hyrule and the existence of the ancient Zonai race, along with discovering the mummified corpse of the original Ganon under the depths of the Hyrule Castle.
After accidentally reviving the corpse, Link gets his Master Sword destroyed in an attempt to save Zelda. As the ground underneath them crumbles, Zelda and Link are separated, and Link loses consciousness. Ganondorf also falls into the abyss, but only after consuming almost all of Link’s power and unleashing darkness into the world.

With Demon King Ganondorf plunging the Hyrule Kingdom into darkness, Link has to spend much of his time uniting all races of Hyrule and bringing together the six Sages to take him down. Here are the key events that take place during the ending of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Zelda Becomes the Light Dragon
As Zelda finds herself transported into the past before the Imprisonment War, she meets Rauru and Sonia, the King and Queen of Hyrule, and her ancestors. Knowing what the future holds, Zelda understands that Rauru’s attempt to seal away the Demon King for eternity fails.
With no way to return to the present timeline, she realizes that the only way to help Link in the present is by swallowing the Secret Stone and becoming the Eternal Dragon. Although Mineru warns her that this transformation is irreversible, Zelda chooses to use her immortality to restore the Master Sword decayed by Gloom.
Final Showdown Against the Demon King
After obtaining the freshly restored Master Sword from the Light Dragon in the present timeline, Link faces off against Demon King Ganondorf in a one-on-one duel. The final showdown against the Demon King occurs in a grueling, three-part boss fight.
The first half of the fight takes place in the depths beneath Hyrule Castle. Link duels against the Demon King in his Menace Unleashed form to the best of his abilities. However, once one-third of his health depletes, the Demon King evolves into his Master of the Secret Stone form.
In this form, Ganondorf becomes even more powerful and menacing than before. With slight changes in his attack pattern, the fight drags on until two-thirds of the Demon King’s health is depleted.
Demon King Becomes the Demon Dragon
In the act of desperation, the Demon King swallows his Secret Stone to become an overwhelmingly large Demon Dragon. And just as Link is about to be swallowed whole by the Draconified Demon King, the Light Dragon swoops into Link’s rescue.
With Zelda’s help, Link is able to destroy all the Eyes of Malice on the Demon Dragon’s back and the Secret Stone on its forehead. With this, Ganondorf is defeated, and everyone lives happily ever after…or not.
The Aftermath
The epic battle against the great Demon King leaves Zelda weakened. That’s when Link uses Rauru’s power in his right arm to revive Zelda. With Rauru and Sonia’s spirits standing behind Link to lend their power, Zelda awakens back to her original Hylian form. Moreover, Link’s original arm is also restored, but some of Rauru’s powers remain inside him.
After Rauru and Sonia join hands and disappear into the afterlife, both Link and Zelda fall from the sky, with Link grabbing Zelda just in time. They both fall into a lake, and Link waits for Zelda to wake up. She eventually regains consciousness, and the Kingdom is saved from all threats. This concludes the story of Tears of the Kingdom.
Having said that, it is unlikely that Hyrule is truly safe from all possible threats, as there might still be ways for Ganon to make a comeback. Given Tears of the Kingdom’s astounding success, a sequel may very likely be on the way. So, nothing is truly off the table.
