In a recent turn of events that’s igniting conversations throughout the Apex Legends community, the developers at Respawn Entertainment have reportedly recognized that the “Controller” class in Apex Legends is “not hitting” as they had hoped.

A recent leak making the rounds on social media reveals that the class, built for area control and strategic zone play, has found it challenging to keep pace with the fast, movement-driven gunplay that characterizes much of the game. This revelation has sparked curiosity among players: Could it be the moment for the Controller legends to receive the recognition and enhancements they truly deserve?

Why Controller Legends Are Struggling in the Current Meta

The Controller class — featuring iconic characters like Caustic, Wattson, Rampart, and Catalyst — was initially designed with a focus on strategic area denial, ring control, and teamwork. With their class perks, players can tap into ring consoles to sway the next circle’s location, granting them a strategic edge in positioning and map dominance.

Yet, in spite of this admirable design vision, the actual gameplay of Apex Legends has shifted towards quicker, more intense movement and combat. Legends boasting high mobility or direct combat capabilities are gaining traction in numerous squads, resulting in Controller legends being pushed further to the sidelines.

According to a discussion on the official Apex forums, certain players believe that the balancing team has not adequately supported Controller legends, opting instead to favor legends with “quick movement speed” to enhance the game’s momentum.

Community voices echo that sentiment. On Reddit, one player lamented:

“Controllers definitely need something. The characters themselves in that class need individual buffs too.”

It has been observed that even when Controller legends effectively manage zones, the rapid tempo of gunfights and rotations frequently eclipses these advantages.

In summary, although Controllers can shine in deliberate, strategic maneuvers, the prevailing meta favors sheer movement, shooting prowess, and quick reflexes — resulting in the Controller class falling short.

What the “Not Hitting” Acknowledgement Means

A recent leak circulating on social media, shared by a data miner on X/Twitter, indicates that Respawn is aware of the issue: the Controller class “is not hitting” as intended in its current state. This acknowledgment holds great importance—it may indicate forthcoming balance adjustments, enhancements, or even complete overhauls for the Controller legends.

Should Respawn proceed as anticipated, we could see a range of exciting changes, including refinements to the interaction between ring-control perks and “area denial” abilities during high-octane firefights.

Enhancements or adjustments aimed at elevating Controller ultimates and abilities, ensuring they deliver reliable value even in high-pressure situations. Also, enhancements to their mobility, utility, or survivability are needed to enable them to more effectively compete with high-mobility legends.

This could mark the start of a significant re-balancing shift—one that recognizes the disconnect between Controller class design and the evolving gameplay style of Apex.
