Riot is changing the Ranked System once more from Split 2 and onwards.
Over the start of Season 13, Riot has made a lot of changes for Ranked in League of Legends. Part of it is to give players more rewards while making it more competitive and not all about people waiting until the end to climb.
The previous ranked system had a lot of downtimes, so Riot introduced the two-split system. Also, to compensate for the new system, some LP changes have been made to help players climb faster.
Overall, two splits meant more Victorious Skins, a better rewards progression, rewarding time put into Ranked, etc. These are great changes thus far. Given their track record this Season, Riot has made changes where they needed to.
Therefore, the experience has been decent. However, a new problem has popped up as the rank distribution has skewed too much for Silver and Below, as most of the players are ranked there. Thus, Riot is making many changes with a new Tier and so on. Here is what we know so far.

Ranked System Changes Split 2
Starting from Split 2, Ranked has made a lot of changes. As per Riot, Ranked generally had a bottom-heavy distribution, but in this Splits case, they have noticed that players with higher skill are still stuck at a lower rank.
Emerald Tier
Thus, Riot is adding a new tier called Emerald Tier. This will be placed between Platinum and Diamond and will serve as a way for players to be there before going to Diamond while not bogging down Platinum.
This will make Platinum and Gold middle-tier ELOs and reduce the numbers in Silver and Bronze. Also, with a ranked reset, players will undergo a partial reset and be placed at a higher rank to continue the climb for Split 2.
Also, there are two more significant changes coming.
Placement Games Reduced
From Split 2, Placement Games are being reduced to 5 from 10. This will allow faster ranking up and save time fro players. This is here to stay, and the new placement system should be interesting.
Promotion Series Removed
Riot is removing Promotion Series from Split 2 and onwards. Thus, players can now climb to a higher tier when they reach the specific LP. This will remove the frustration of players, and it will also reduce the time taken to climb. Overall, this is an interesting change and will help people climb faster.
Riot’s Aim With These Changes
These are the following aspects Riot aims to improve.
- Flattening the rank curve will allow players to go closer to their actual skill level and have a higher rank.
- Adding a new rank tier: Emerald will help transition from Platinum to Diamond and make climbing easier for players across the ladder.
- Promotion Series is gone, thus reducing frustration.
- Partially resetting ranks and making it faster to complete placements.
Hopefully, all these will help the Ranked System from Split 2 of Season 13 and onwards. Ranked Split 1 and set to end on July 17, 23:55 CST, and Split 2 starts a day or two later from that point. Also, Victorious Anivia has been revealed for Ranked Split 1 as a reward. Here is to hoping we get a good Split 2 soon.
