League of Legends is about to tap straight into nostalgia, and this time it is not just another skin line or throwback event. Riot has confirmed that Stormraider’s Surge and Deathfire Touch will return in Season 2 of 2026, bringing back two of the most memorable keystone effects from the old mastery era. The news was shared by Riot gameplay designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison in a Season 2 teaser during First Stand 2026, and the leak quickly spread across community accounts like LeagueOfLeaks.

This is the kind of change that instantly sparks memories of old builds, busted lane trades, and champions abusing keystones in ways Riot probably regretted later. It means Season 2 could feel very different depending on how closely Riot sticks to the original designs.

Riot Has Confirmed the Return of Both Runes

The biggest takeaway here is that this is no longer just rumor mill content. Riot’s official League of Legends account shared Phroxzon’s message saying that Deathfire Touch and Stormraider’s Surge will be returning in Season 2. That gives the leak real weight, even if Riot has not yet revealed the final numbers, rune trees, or exact reworked versions.

That missing detail matters a lot. Riot has only confirmed the names and the return window so far. It has not been confirmed whether these runes will come back exactly as veterans remember them or whether they will be redesigned to fit the modern League.

The OG Deathfire Touch Explained

Back in the old mastery system, Deathfire Touch rewarded ability damage by applying a burn effect to enemy champions. It was one of those keystones that always felt annoying to play against because it gave poke mages and ability-based marksmen even more lane pressure. Historically, it was part of the Ferocity tree and was removed with the big preseason overhaul tied to Patch 7.22 and Season 2018.

That is exactly why its return is such a big deal. Deathfire Touch was not just popular because it was strong. It had a very clear identity. If your champion loved repeated spell damage, the rune made every trade feel nastier. In the modern League, where Riot is constantly trying to tone down frustrating poke patterns, bringing this effect back could get controversial very fast. That last part is an inference based on the rune’s historical use and Riot’s current design direction.

The OG Stormraider’s Surge Explained

Stormraider’s Surge was the old mobility keystone that activated after dealing a chunk of burst damage. Its classic effect granted bonus movement speed and slow resistance after hitting the damage threshold, which made it a favorite on champions that wanted to dive in, unload damage, and instantly reposition. It was introduced in Patch 5.22, later buffed in Patch 6.1, and eventually removed in Patch 7.22 when Riot replaced it with Phase Rush for Season 2018.

That connection to Phase Rush is the part that should get players talking. Stormraider’s Surge was basically one of the foundations for Riot’s later movement keystone design. So if it is coming back, Riot now has to answer an obvious question: is Phase Rush getting removed, reworked, or forced to coexist with a more burst-focused version of the same idea? Riot has not answered that yet.

This is where things get interesting. On paper, bringing back two beloved old runes sounds like a fun nostalgia play. In practice, it could seriously reshape champion priorities across mid lane, jungle, and even bot lane, depending on their final tuning.

Deathfire Touch could instantly become a magnet for champions that love consistent spell harassment. Stormraider’s Surge, on the other hand, looks tailor-made for burst mages, assassins, and slippery skirmishers that want extra escape power after blowing someone up. If Riot misses the tuning, these runes could go from nostalgic fan service to a balance nightmare in record time. That projection is an inference based on the original rune effects and their past champion synergies.

And honestly, that is what makes this announcement so exciting. League has felt increasingly safe with some of its systemic choices. Bringing back two older keystones with strong identities suggests Riot wants Season 2 to feel more chaotic, more expressive, and maybe a little more dangerous. Whether that ends up being brilliant or disastrous depends entirely on the final implementation.

Stormraider’s Surge and Deathfire Touch Release Date

Riot has only said the runes are coming in Season 2 of 2026, but one report points to Patch 26.09 on April 29, 2026, as the earliest likely window based on the current patch cadence. That date has not been directly confirmed by Riot, so it should be treated as an estimate rather than a locked release date.

Still, unless Riot changes course, players probably will not have to wait too long to see what these runes actually look like in their modern form.

Old League Is Creeping Back In

There is something very funny about the modern League constantly trying to evolve while also digging through its own attic for old ideas. Deathfire Touch and Stormraider’s Surge are not random names. They are part of an era many longtime players still remember very clearly, and Riot knows exactly what kind of reaction this announcement would get.

That is why this feels bigger than a simple rune update. It is a signal. Riot seems more willing to revive older mechanics if they think those ideas can still create exciting gameplay today. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it reminds everyone why those systems were removed in the first place.

Either way, Season 2 of 2026 just became a lot more interesting.
