League of Legends Patch 26.8 is shaping up to be a much smaller update than usual, and Riot is being pretty upfront about why. According to Riotโs patch preview, the team does not want to shake up the game too hard right before Patch 26.9, which is expected to arrive as part of the gameโs next seasonal update. Riotโs official 2026 patch schedule currently lists Patch 26.8 for April 15, with Patch 26.9 following on April 29.
That means this patch looks more like a tune-up than a full meta reset. Still, there are some notable champion changes on the way, especially if you play Hwei, Lillia, Lucian, Viego, Mel, Dr. Mundo, or Yuumi. Based on Riot Phroxzonโs preview and the patch image, Patch 26.8 currently includes buffs for Hwei, Lillia, Lucian, and Viego, nerfs for Mel and Dr. Mundo, plus an adjustment for Yuumi. Riot has also said that more details on the exact numbers will come later once the changes are fully locked in.
League of Legends Patch 26.8 Preview at a Glance
The preview image for Patch 26.8 shows a very short list compared to some of the heavier balance updates we have seen earlier this year. On Summonerโs Rift, Riot is targeting four buffs, two nerfs, and one champion adjustment. The champions getting buffed are Hwei, Lillia, Lucian, and Viego. Mel and Dr. Mundo are being nerfed. Yuumi is the only champion listed under adjustments right now.
That smaller scope lines up with Riotโs recent messaging around the current patch cycle. In the official 26.7 notes, the developers already said live balance was on the lighter side because their focus was starting to shift toward the Season 2 update next month. Patch 26.8 seems to continue that same approach.
Patch 26.8 Is So Small
Riot says it is intentionally keeping 26.8 restrained because Patch 26.9 is expected to bring several system changes that could have ripple effects across the roster. In other words, the devs do not want to make a huge batch of champion changes now, only to watch the next patch completely change what is strong and weak anyway. Riot also mentioned that a few larger champion updates were being worked on for 26.9, but those changes were not ready in time for 26.8.
This is actually a pretty familiar Riot move before larger seasonal updates. Rather than throwing out a giant balance patch right before broader gameplay shifts, the team usually tries to clean up the biggest outliers and save major work for the patch that introduces the new systems. With 26.9 coming two weeks after 26.8 on the official schedule, that pacing makes sense here.
Hwei, Lillia, Lucian, and Viego Buffs
The biggest headline for a lot of players will be the buffs. Hwei, Lillia, Lucian, and Viego are all on Riotโs buff list for 26.8, though the exact abilities or stat changes have not been revealed yet. Riot did explain the broader philosophy behind some of these buffs, saying future balance work will increasingly focus on reinforcing what makes champions feel unique, even if that means their power does not look perfectly flat across every skill bracket.
That is a pretty important bit of context. Riot is basically saying it wants champions to feel more like themselves, rather than sanding off their edges just to make win rates look cleaner. So when the final 26.8 details drop, do not be surprised if these buffs are aimed less at raw generic power and more at the parts of each champion that define their identity.
Mel Nerfs After Her 26.5 Buffs
Mel is getting pulled back in Patch 26.8 after Riot admitted her 26.5 buffs landed too hard. The dev team says those earlier changes ended up being over-tuned, so this patch is meant to reel some of that power in. Riot also said that while Mel may still end up numerically balanced after the nerf, that does not automatically solve the bigger question of whether she feels frustrating to play against.
That last point is probably the more interesting one. Riot is still evaluating whether Melโs gameplay can be made less annoying for opponents while staying true to the character and still feeling approachable for Arcane fans. The developers say they have been testing additional ideas, but nothing is ready to share yet. So Patch 26.8 may not be the final word on Mel by any means.
Dr. Mundo Nerfs Target His Frustrating Late Game
Dr. Mundo is also getting nerfed, and Riotโs reasoning here is pretty direct. The devs say Mundo has consistently shown up near the top of frustration surveys, and he has also been overperforming, especially in jungle and especially in average skill brackets. To address that, Riot is targeting some of his late game damage.
The goal is not to delete his identity as a tanky menace who runs straight through a fight. Instead, Riot wants him to be a little less capable of casually solo killing people while still doing the whole Mundo thing of walking wherever he wants. That should be welcome news for players who feel like he has been doing too much damage while also being miserable to bring down.
Yuumi Adjustment Comes With a Major Bug Fix
Yuumi is the most unusual case in Patch 26.8 because Riot framed her change around a bug fix. According to the preview, the team recently found a bug where Yuumiโs ultimate was healing her attached ally every time it healed another ally. Riot says that the situation does not happen constantly, but in the best-case scenario, it creates a pretty significant amount of extra healing.
Now that the bug is being fixed, Riot is also adding compensation buffs to her ultimate and other healing sources. So while this technically falls under an adjustment instead of a straight buff, it sounds like Riot is trying to make sure Yuumi does not simply lose power because of a bug getting removed. That should make her final 26.8 changelist one of the more interesting ones to watch.
LOL Patch 26.8 Full Preview!
Viego
- There’s some notable discrepancies for specifically Viego’s data in our internal data that led us to want to initially buff him
- Looking at external data however seems to be notably different
- Going to double check this data tomorrow and validate the data pipelines before determining whether or not to proceed with the buff
Hwei
- In line with the fantasy fulfilment I was talking about yesterday, Hwei changes are leaning into his identity as a combo mage
- It is a cool pattern and in particular, this set of changes skews him more towards being effective in mid lane compared to bot lane with the level scaling
- We’re not opposed to him being viable in bot lane, but pushing him towards midlane
- We think this makes Hwei more uniquely satisfying compared to say having his damage come from predominantly single QQ, QW or QE casts
Lillia
- Lillia’s power clearing and movement speed are some of her most defining aspects
- We’re restoring some of that clear speed to better fulfil her fantasy there
Lucian
- Lucian in bot lane doesn’t have a strong differentiation from Corki as a similarly early game dominant ability focused caster
- These changes are trying to put more of Lucian’s power into his early mobility and giving him more casts of it
- We’re going to monitor Lucian in solo lanes
Mel
- We separated some of Mel’s damage output in 26.3 by creating a separation between her first initial hit and the subsequent hits
- We’re reducing how much value she gets from this initial Q landing and backloading the damage more to give her damage more counterplay
- We still think we need to do more work to Mel long term
- (ARAM) Another note here is that we’ve been investigating some ARAM specific changes to Mel, since her reflect can be harder to play against in that mode, given the narrowness of the play area
Mundo
- Mundo rates very highly on our frustration metrics and our changes here are targeted at average play Jungle
- Not much to say here, we think top is in a more reasonable spot

When Does LoL Patch 26.8 Release?
If Riot sticks to its official 2026 patch schedule, League of Legends Patch 26.8 should go live on April 15. As always, that date can still shift if Riot runs into issues, but that is the currently listed release window on the official support page.
Patch 26.8 looks like a setup patch. It is cleaning up a few problem champions, giving a handful of weaker picks some help, and buying time before 26.9 potentially changes a lot more under the hood. That may not sound flashy, but sometimes these smaller patches end up mattering more than people expect, especially when they help define what the game looks like right before a bigger seasonal shakeup.
