A lot of recent rumors and leaks may suggest that League of Legends might get an engine update sometime in 2025.

League of Legends was released back in 2009. Back then almost every single game used a custom-made engine, and League of Legends was no exception.

During that time, most companies used to make custom engines per game. As each game demanded something unique, there were no universal game engines. The highest a game developer would do in that sort of nature would be to license or partner with another engine developer and even then these game developers would modify the engine heavily to the point where it is unnoticeable.

With that said, the times have changed a lot. And now companies mostly use commercial game engines like Unity, Unreal Engine, Gamemaker, etc. Alongside that, League of Legends has also become very popular. Currently, League of Legends is one of the most-played pc games of all time.

With all of that said League of Legends still uses the same proprietary game engine that was made in around 2009. Due to this reason, the game is held back significantly. While this engine allows older and bad PCs to run the game, it still causes a lot of pain during the development. The client that League of Legends uses doesn’t even work properly most of the time. Even recently, when Riot removed the old Skarner, the entire game broke for some reason.

With that said, there were rumors before that, Riot Games was supposed to update its game engine in 2025. If that’s the case then here’s everything that might change with this update.

League of Legends: Engine Update In 2025?

Let’s recap for a bit. Not too long ago, MonteCristo confirmed on a podcast that Riot was supposed to update the League of Legends engine in 2025. However, the update might have been scrapped due to the scale, lack of manpower, or a combination of both.

With that said, what does the engine update actually mean for the game? Well-known League of Legends leaker, Big Bad Bear, recently speculated what that might entail.

The first thing that might happen with the engine change is that the map might change more often. For example, in the future, we might get a Noxus-themed Summoner’s Rift, or Ionia-themed Summoner’s Rift, or even a Piltover & Zaun-themed Summoner’s Rift. The possibilities are endless here.

Currently, Riot cannot make skins similar to Elimentalist Lux due to memory limitations caused by the outdated engine. But with the new engine, we might get more advanced skins that we have never seen before. However, most likely these skins will be made as an Exalted skin.
