In a recent interview with MonteCristo, he revealed that Riot once planned to upgrade League of Legends’ game engine for 2025.
League of Legends was released in 2009. And at the time it was created using a custom engine by Riot Games.
At the time, making a custom engine per game was very common. Today where using widespread engines like Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Gamemaker, etc. is a common thing, back then, those weren’t really good options. Moreover, these public engines didn’t offer the specific features that developers wanted. Because of these reasons, companies would opt for making a custom engine for their game.
With that said, since the release of the game, League of Legends has gotten very popular. Even though it’s going on for 15 years, the players still come back. However, one thing still remained the same, and that’s the engine.
League of Legends’ engine is one of the main reasons the game is held back. While this engine allows older and bad PCs to run the game, it still causes a lot of pain during the development. The client that League of Legends uses doesn’t even work properly most of the time. If you press way too many tabs in a short amount of time, it bugs out or stops working entirely. Even recently, when Riot removed the old Skarner, the entire game broke for some reason.
With all of that said, it’s understandable why Riot didn’t use any custom engines for Wild Rift and Valorant. And recently, one of the most well-known commentators for League of Legends esports, MonteCristo, revealed that Riot once planned to upgrade the League of Legends game engine for 2025. Additionally, it might have been the update to change League of Legends forever.

League of Legends: New Engine Upgrade In 2025?
Not too long ago, in a dev log, Riot Pupulasers stated that 2025 would be the year that will change League forever. At the time, no one really knew what it really meant. Players were both skeptical and excited.
However, it didn’t last very long as Riot Meddler then replied to a Reddit thread that the previous statement was a “Bit of an oversell”. He also added that they are not upgrading everything at once or anything at that level.
Despite that, MonteCristo, recently mentioned that there were plans for an engine upgrade for League of Legends. Additionally, there were demos that were tested within Riot Games on a broader scale.
However, as Riot Meddler walked back the statement, it is safe to say that, the engine upgrade was either canceled or delayed. The most likely possibility is as MonteCristo mentioned in the podcast that, they were short on staff and/or there were technical difficulties where it may take longer than 2025 if they were to go and fix all of them.
Besides the engine changes, we will get a lot of new additions in 2025. Not only that, if the engine changes are only delayed, then we might get them sometime in the coming years.
