Electronic Arts has confirmed that the long-troubled online action RPG Anthem will have its servers permanently shut down on January 12, 2026, meaning the game will no longer be playable in any form once the servers go offline. This announcement marks the final chapter in the lifespan of a title that once carried big hopes but struggled to live up to its promise.

The Rise of Anthem and the Hype Around Its Launch

When Anthem was first revealed by BioWare and EA, it was positioned as a bold new live-service franchise that would blend dynamic combat with cooperative play and high-flying exploration in a lush sci-fi world. The game’s reveal generated substantial excitement among fans of BioWare’s narrative-driven work, who were eager for a fresh universe to dive into. However, upon its official release in early 2019, Anthem received mixed reviews and struggled to win over a broad player base due to technical issues, a lack of compelling end-game content, and gameplay that many felt failed to live up to the lofty expectations set during its marketing campaign.

Despite some praise for its innovative movement and core combat mechanics, Anthem was widely seen as an underwhelming debut for what EA hoped would become a premier live-service franchise. The title did not achieve the sales and player engagement figures EA anticipated.

EA and BioWare’s Attempt to Revive the Title With Anthem 2.0

In response to the game’s disappointing reception and dwindling community, BioWare and EA announced plans to overhaul Anthem with a major redesign referred to as Anthem Next, or Anthem 2.0. This planned reinvention aimed to address many of the foundational issues of the original game by reworking its systems, improving progression, and expanding content in ways that would capture the vision players expected from the outset.

Unfortunately for fans, the Anthem 2.0 project never came to fruition. In February 2021, BioWare officially canceled the overhaul and redirected resources toward other major projects in the studio’s pipeline, including new entries in the Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises. With the cancellation of the reboot, ongoing development on Anthem effectively ceased, and the game remained in its original, largely unchanged state for years afterward.

The Final Days Before Servers Go Offline

Following the cancellation of its major redesign and years of minimal updates, Anthem has been slowly winding down as an active live-service title. The game was eventually removed from EA Play in August 2025, and players have been given notice that the servers will go dark in early 2026. Once the shutdown occurs, the game’s online-only design means that no offline or local options will be available, rendering Anthem unplayable beyond that point.

This server closure is part of a broader trend at EA, which has been sunsetting multiple online titles as part of portfolio reshaping and cost management strategies. For Anthem, the shutdown represents the definitive end of a project that began with high ambitions but ultimately struggled to secure a lasting place in the competitive live-service landscape.

This closure closes the book on Anthem after a tumultuous history of hype, unmet expectations, and a canceled revival effort, solidifying its legacy as one of the more high-profile live-service casualties in recent memory.
