Octane has long been one of the most recognizable and popular Legends in Apex Legends, but his popularity has apparently created a major problem for Respawn. According to recent developer comments, Octane is considered one of the team’s “biggest balancing headaches,” with a major gap between how often players choose him and how well he performs at higher skill levels.

In brief

  • Apex developers reportedly consider Octane one of their toughest Legends to balance
  • His popularity remains high despite weaker performance among more experienced players
  • Respawn wants to offer skilled Octane players more meaningful gameplay options
  • Previous Octane changes have already caused major swings in his pick rate and combat performance

Octane’s core appeal has always been straightforward. He moves fast, takes aggressive fights, and offers an easy-to-understand kit that feels fun almost immediately.

Developers explained that Octane remains one of the most picked Legends, meaning even relatively small adjustments can have a huge effect across the overall player base.

At the same time, Octane reportedly struggles more as the skill level increases. Respawn has previously acknowledged a similar issue, noting that Octane could fall close to the bottom of its pick rate data in Diamond and Masters despite remaining a fan favorite.

The goal of the next stage of Octane’s balancing appears to be adding more depth without removing what makes him enjoyable for casual players.

Rather than simply increasing his speed or raw power, Respawn reportedly wants experienced players to have more choices within his kit. And that could potentially give skilled Octane mains additional ways to approach fights while maintaining the fast-paced identity that made the Legend popular in the first place.

Finding that balance will not be easy. Respawn already significantly strengthened Octane earlier in 2026 before later reducing parts of his Stim after his pick rate and fight win rate reached levels the studio considered unhealthy.

The challenge is now making Octane stronger and more expressive at higher levels without turning one of Apex Legends’ most popular characters into an overwhelming force for everyone else. All in all, the dev team at Respawn has a tough task ahead.
