Dying Light 2 is the action-packed survival horror sequel to Techland’s zombie-apocalyptic videogame franchise of Dying Light. Set 22 years after the events of the first game, Dying Light introduces us to our new protagonist Aiden Caldwell. With the mission of finding his lost sister, Aiden embarks on a dangerous journey across the zombie-infested lands of Villedor.

Dying Light 2 offers an array of tools and gadgets that makes both exploration and survival easier for Aiden. Each tool or gadget is unique, and some of them can even be upgraded for Military Tech and Old World Money. But not to worry, as none of these Nightrunner tools are missable.

There are a total of 6 Nightrunner tools in Dying Light 2. Aiden will pick up Nightrunner tools such as the GRE Access Key, a pair of Binoculars, a Paraglider, a UV Flashlight, the GRE Detector, and a Grappling Hook during his journey. In this guide, we will talk about how and when you can unlock these tools and how to upgrade them.

1. GRE Access Key

This is the very first tool unlocked in the game. Aiden receives the GRE Access Key during the game’s very first mission, Pilgrim’s Path. It is given to him by a mysterious informant named Dylan before he gets killed by Waltz and the Renegades.

The GRE Access Key can be used to unlock GRE locks. The locks can be differentiated by the unique yellow light emitting from them. These GRE locks mostly unlock doorways to secret areas, Inhibitors, and unique resources and loot. The GRE Access Key you receive is a standard issue and cannot be upgraded.

2. Binoculars

Towards the end of the Markers of Plague mission, you will exchange a heartfelt conversation with Hakon about your future plans after finding your sister. He will then give you a pair of Binoculars as a parting gift.

Binoculars are extremely useful, as they help you discover important locations in the open world. Once you have successfully discovered a new location with your binoculars, the landmark will automatically show up on your map.

Moreover, you can also use them to mark locations and place waypoints. Furthermore, hovering over a specific target when you’re using the binocular mode allows you to read more about them. Lastly, you can also use it to identify enemies and environmental hazards. However, these Binoculars cannot be upgraded.

3. Paraglider

The paraglider can be unlocked after reaching Central Loop and meeting up with a character named Lawan during “A Place to Call Home” main story quest. It is one of the most convenient Nightrunner tools you will get, as it lets you glide across the sky and cover large distances with ease.

Although, there is a bit of a learning curve with this tool due to the maneuverability restrictions at its base level; as well as the fact that gliding consumes your stamina. However, the Paraglider can be upgraded twice to solve those problems.

4. UV Flashlight

The UV Flashlight is unlocked during the “Welcome On Board” main story quest, which takes place during the second half of the game. When you talk to Meyer, she will hand you the UV Flashlight as a reward for helping out the Peacekeepers.

The zombies in Dying Light, especially the special infected cannot withstand UV rays. This will help you out in really tight situations by repelling the zombies out of your way when you find yourself cornered. Unlike the paraglider, the UV flashlight does take up an accessory slot. The UV Flashlight can be upgraded.

How to Upgrade the UV Flashlight in Dying Light 2?

The UV flashlight can be upgraded a total of two times:

  • Upgrade 1:
    • Effect: Increases the UV Flashlight’s cone size and battery
    • Cost: 2 Military Tech + 1,000 Old World Money.
  • Upgrade 2:
    • Effect: A flash effect is added to the UV Flashlight. The recharge rate is also boosted.
    • Cost: 2 Military Tech + 2,000 Old World Money.

5. GRE Detector

The GRE Detector is unlocked during the Broadcast mission, which is near the end of the main story. After restoring the power of the VNC tower, pull the cable through the basement and return to Rowe, who is waiting for you at the camp. He will reward you with the GRE Detector for helping him save his squad.

The GRE Detector makes tracking down Inhibitors a piece of cake. It is a proximity tool that detects the radio waves of inhibitors and pinpoints their location on your map. However, for it to work, the district must have an activated and functioning radio tower. The GRE Detector cannot be upgraded.

6. Grappling Hook

This is the last Nightrunner tool you will find, and it is also unlocked during the Broadcast mission. After being ambushed and separated from the soldiers, a hoard of infected will attack you. Just when you are about to give up hope, Frank will tell you to check the elevator shaft to find the Nightrunner equipment. Pry open the elevator door and climb up the shaft. You will find the Grappling Hook pierced into the wall. The grappling hook allows you to swing over large gaps and escape enemies. It can be upgraded.

How to Upgrade the Grappling Hook in Dying Light 2?

The Grappling Hook can be upgraded twice:

  • Upgrade 1:
    • Effect: Boosts momentum when swinging
    • Cost: 2 Military Tech + 2,000 Old World Money.
  • Upgrade 2:
    • Effect: Allows Aiden to latch the grappling hook onto enemies to pull them closer.
    • Cost: 3 Military Tech + 3,000 Old World Money.
