Everything you need to know about Airdrops in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077 is a dystopian sci-fi RPG set in the near future. Developed by CD Projekt Red, it has a massive amount of content and things to do, just like the developer’s previous games.

This includes a lot of loot and customization options for you to acquire, including weapons, armor, and other gear.

There are lots of ways to find and acquire loot and gear in the game, including main missions, side quests, gigs, looting NPCs, and vendors. Phantom Liberty, the first expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, brings in a new mechanic for you to get the best weapons and gear in the form of airdrops.

Phantom Liberty takes you to Dogtown, controlled by the Barghest militia led by Kurt Hansen. As Dogtown is landlocked, the only way for him to get supplies is through airdrops. As you first make your way into Dogtown, you will spot an airdrop on the roof of a distant skyscraper, which you can loot if you can get to the landing site and take out Hansen’s soldiers.

Airdrops are one of the best sources of loot in the game. Furthermore, you should look out for them during your time in Dogtown, as you’ll need good gear to assist you in your mission to rescue President Myers.

This guide is all about airdrops and how to loot them. Additionally, it will also tell you how to unlock airdrops and find information about them in-game.

What are Airdrops and How Do They Work

Airdrops are random loot drops from airborne carriers that land in various locations throughout Dogtown. They are red boxes full of loot and produce red smoke to indicate their location.

Airdrops can be found in any location in Dogtown, but mostly in areas with a high volume of Barghest.

Airdrops contain high-quality loot, including:

  • Weapons
  • Cyberware
  • Capacity Shards
  • Skill Shards
  • Mods
  • Clothing
  • Item Components.

Additionally, they can also contain iconic weapons that can only be found from rewards. These are:

  • Alabai (Power Shotgun)
  • Taigan (Power Revolver)
  • Laika (Tech Revolver)

These guns have a random chance of being in airdrops and have the Techtronika perk which gives a chance to inflict burn on enemies. Furthermore, they give you guaranteed crit damage against burning enemies which increases with the number of burning enemies.

How to Unlock Airdrops

You will first be introduce to Airdrops during the main quest “Lucretia My Reflection”. After you take President Myers to the hideout, you will be tasked with finding Solomon Reed. At this point, you are free to explore Dogtown.

If you previously chose to trust Jacob and Taylor, Jacob will inform you of one of Hansen’s airdrops dropping nearby. You’ll be able to spot this airdrop from the red smoke coming from a nearby building. As you continue to explore Dogtown, you will be able to find more such airdrops throughout the area.

How to Loot Airdrops

There are different types of airdrop encounters which occur randomly. These are:

  • Gunfights: Barghest will be fighting another faction for the airdrop.
  • Ambush: The airdrop will seem abandoned, but soldiers will arrive once you loot the airdrop. You can either kill these soldiers or run away
  • Junk: Abandoned airdrops that contain junk and a note from an angry supplier
  • Guarded: The airdrop will be surrounded by the Barghest militia. To loot the airdrop, you can either kill or sneak past them.
  • Grab: When you can get to the airdrop before anyone else. Hence, you can loot them without any interference.

You’ll be able to recognize airdrops by the sounds of the loud airborne carriers and the red smoke that appears when the containers land.

After clearing the airdrop you’ll be able to jack into the container and solve a Breach Protocol Hacking puzzle to unlock your loot.
