Bungie is working on changes to Marathon’s spawn rushing, audio cues, and Rook inventory after players raised concerns about aggressive crews clearing lobbies and repeated deaths draining their gear. The studio wants players to have more room to sneak around, escape fights, and leave a run with something useful.

In a statement shared by the Marathon development team, Bungie outlined several changes planned for Symbiosis, alongside audio adjustments that are still being discussed.

In brief:

  • Bungie says players feel spawn rushing and lobby clearing are making Marathon sessions play out like a battle royale.
  • Symbiosis will expand Perimeter with more opportunities to explore, escape, and evade rival crews.
  • Cryo spawn rushes are being targeted, while shorter audio ranges could help players stay unnoticed.
  • Rook will retain items in their default inventory after death, although equipped gear will still be lost.

Bungie Wants More Stealth and Survival in Marathon

Bungie says feedback has highlighted how spawn rushing and lobby clearing can push extraction sessions toward a battle royale style of play. The studio wants more cat-and-mouse encounters, with stealth offering a viable way to survive and collect loot.

That goal is shaping Perimeter’s upcoming expansion. Bungie is adding more places to explore and more options for escaping other crews, giving players additional ways to get out of trouble when a fight turns against them.

Symbiosis is scheduled for December, with the expanded Perimeter already listed among its major additions.

Cryo Spawn Rushing Changes Are Planned for Symbiosis

To address Cryo spawn rushes, Bungie is exploring changes to the Level 2 doors connecting spawn rooms to Level 3. The team hasn’t explained exactly how those doors would work after the adjustment.

The guaranteed Security Monitor in Revival will also become random. Bungie lists these Cryo changes as part of its Symbiosis plans.

Both adjustments target predictable elements that crews can build their opening moves around. Their effectiveness will depend on the final implementation, but the intent is to give players more breathing room at the start of a run.

Marathon Exfil and Locked Room Audio Could Have Half the Range

Bungie is also working on reducing how far certain activity sounds travel.

The proposed changes would cut the audible range of exfil and locked room cues by roughly 50%, keeping those sounds mostly within the local point of interest. That could reduce how often distant crews hear an activity and move in to contest it.

The team is also considering limiting Key Room audio to Gold rooms, giving stealth-focused players a better chance to collect worthwhile loot without announcing their activity as widely.

These audio changes are still being discussed between Bungie’s audio and design teams, so the details could change.

Rook Inventory Protection Aims to Ease Gear Loss

Rook’s Symbiosis changes directly address concerns about death spirals and losing progress across repeated failed runs.

Under the announced plan:

  • Items in Rook’s default 4×2 inventory will stay with them after death.
  • Weapons, shields, cores, and implants in gear slots will still be lost.
  • Rook won’t be able to equip a backpack that expands inventory beyond the default capacity.
  • A Faction upgrade will increase inventory space to 4×4.

The aim is to make Rook a lower-pressure option for collecting credits, materials, and gear for future runs. Even if another Runner kills them, the items kept in their inventory would still help fund the next attempt.

Bungie says it will share more Symbiosis updates as December approaches and is asking players for further feedback on these proposals.
