Bungie has outlined Marathon’s next few updates, starting with the Nightfall Refresh and building toward a broader overhaul in March 2027. Progression and rewards are getting attention first, while December’s Symbiosis update brings permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, and a new Runner shell.
According to Bungie’s roadmap announcement, the changes address recurring player feedback around onboarding, clearer progression, narrative, and long-term goals.
In brief:
- Nightfall Refresh resets the economy and progression upgrades, adds a Reward Pass, and adjusts weapons and Runner abilities.
- Symbiosis launches December 8 with permanent PvE, an expanded Perimeter, and the new Bishop shell.
- December also adds Team Deathmatch, improved onboarding, and a social space with a firing range.
- March 2027 plans include connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, deeper progression, new enemies, and a new zone.
Marathon Nightfall Refresh Resets Progression and Rewards
The Nightfall Refresh sends players back to the starting line. Credits and equipment are wiped, while Cradle enhancements and Faction aftermarket upgrades return to their default state.
Bungie says the reset should create a more balanced battlefield and a more active economy. Solo players also get updated tuning intended to make UESC encounters less punishing when exploring alone.
There’s a fresh NuCal-inspired Reward Pass, too. It’s available at no additional cost to Marathon owners and has no time limit, so players can work through its rewards at their own pace.
Cryo Archive and Sponsored Queue Schedule

Outpost opens on Thursday following the refresh, while Cryo Archive returns in Week 2, starting October 15. Its weekly availability now runs from Thursday through Monday, giving players more time to finish their runs.
Sponsored Queues follow a repeating three-week rotation:
- Week 1: Sponsored Perimeter.
- Week 2: Sponsored Marsh.
- Week 3: Sponsored Night Marsh.
These queues run Thursday through Monday until Symbiosis launches. Regular Extraction stays available in each zone.
Vault Breaker also returns starting in Week 3, offering a more approachable way to explore Cryo Archive with refreshed rewards.
Nightfall Refresh Weapon and Recon Changes
Bungie is reworking the playstyles of the Repeater HPR and Hardline PR. The Magnum and DRRVSH are becoming less effective, while Recon’s Echo Pulse receives changes aimed at reducing its dominance in team fights.
The announcement gives an overview of those adjustments. Players looking for exact balance changes should check Marathon Update 1.1.9.2’s full patch notes.
Marathon Symbiosis Release Date and Permanent PvE

Marathon: Symbiosis launches December 8, 2026, bringing the game’s first permanent PvE experience.
Bungie describes it as another way to explore Tau Ceti IV, collect loot, and work toward tougher PvE challenges at your own pace. More details will arrive before launch, with key features still in development.
Perimeter is expanding alongside it. A spreading fungal ecosystem transforms the landscape and opens new routes. Bungie is also adding challenge areas comparable to Outpost’s Pinwheel and Night Marsh’s Upper Complex, with rare rewards to chase.
Bishop Shell, Team Deathmatch, and Social Features

Symbiosis introduces Bishop, a Runner shell built around speed, surprise, and bursts of melee damage. Players who enjoy closing the distance quickly will have a new option to try.
December also brings Team Deathmatch for more direct PvP matches, improved onboarding, and a social space with a firing range. These additions give players more ways to spend time in Marathon between extraction runs.
Marathon’s March 2027 Roadmap
March is when Bungie plans to connect its permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP survival experiences.
The current roadmap includes a reworked Cradle, deeper shell progression and customization, expanded onboarding, and a narrative-driven quest system. New alien combatants and an entirely new zone are also planned.
Bungie hasn’t shared an exact March release date. As of writing, Nightfall Refresh starts the progression changes, with Symbiosis delivering the next major content update on December 8.
