Bungie is making a major change to its plans for Marathon, delaying the game’s next major content update from September to December while moving away from a traditional fixed seasonal schedule.
The content previously expected to arrive on September 22 will now launch as part of the Symbiosis update on December 8, 2026. Bungie says the change will give its developers more time to build, test, and improve major features before releasing them.
In brief
- Marathon’s major September 22 update has been pushed to December 8
- Bungie is moving away from a strict seasonal release schedule
- A smaller Nightfall Refresh update will arrive on October 6
- December’s Symbiosis update will add permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, a social space, and more
Marathon’s Next Major Update Moves to December

Bungie originally planned to release Marathon’s next major update on September 22, which had previously been positioned as the beginning of Season 3.
Instead, that content is being folded into Symbiosis, a much larger update scheduled for December 8. Bungie says it is adjusting its plans to make sure the update can meet player expectations.
Symbiosis will introduce several significant additions, including:
- Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience
- A refreshed Perimeter zone
- A new Runner shell
- A social space with a firing range
- An experimental Team Deathmatch mode
- Improvements to the new-player experience
Bungie describes Symbiosis as the beginning of a broader evolution for Marathon that will continue through March 2027 and beyond.
Bungie Is Moving Away From Marathon’s Strict Seasonal Schedule

More importantly, Bungie confirmed that it is changing how Marathon’s future content will be released.
Rather than forcing major updates to meet predetermined seasonal deadlines, Bungie plans to give developers more flexibility to finish and test features before shipping them.
The studio explained that feedback since launch has consistently called for more depth, variety, stronger progression, and better long-term reasons to continue playing. Bungie believes addressing those concerns requires changing both what it builds and how that content is delivered.
So, that means Marathon’s future may no longer revolve around clearly defined three-month seasons in the same way Seasons 1 and 2 did.
Marathon Nightfall Refresh Arrives October 6
Players will not have to wait until December for another update.
On October 6, Bungie will release a smaller Nightfall Refresh designed to improve Marathon’s existing progression systems while the studio works on Symbiosis.
The update includes a full progression and economy reset, a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements, and live balance changes. Vault Breaker will also return temporarily so Bungie can collect more data on how PvE should fit into the game’s progression.
Bungie says it will continue experimenting with Marathon during the eight weeks between the October refresh and December’s Symbiosis update, with more details on the game’s future expected later this month.
