How to break Oath as a Paladin in BG3

Oathbreaker is the fourth and hidden subclass of the Paladin class. Players cannot choose this subclass in the character selection screen at the beginning of the game. Rather, this subclass needs to be unlocked by breaking the oaths of any of the chosen subclasses. Players can break these oaths by choosing dialogue that goes against their morality.

To become an Oathbreaker, players have to break the oaths by doing things that are exactly opposite to the oath of their chosen class. After breaking their oath, an Oathbreaker Knight will visit them during their subsequent extended rest and swear them to be an Oathbreaker. Here is how to break the oath of each of the subclasses of the Paladin class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Oath of Ancients

You fight on the side of light in the cosmic struggle against the darkness to preserve the sanctity of life and the beauty of nature.” – Oath of Ancients

While being sworn to the Oath of Ancients, if you don’t be kind and help others, you will eventually end up breaking the oath. You can break the oath mainly by killing the Owlbear Cub or the Tiefling at Druid Grove.

Oath of Devotion

Following the ideal of the knight in shining armor, you act with honor and virtue to protect the weak and pursue the greater good.” – Oath of Devotion

While being sworn to the Oath of Devotion, if you don’t obey the law and show clemency when necessary, you will eventually end up breaking the oath. For doing so, you can betray the Globins by killing them in the Blight village or torturing Liam at the Shattered Sanctum.

Oath of Vengeance

You have set aside even your own purity to right wrongs and deliver justice to those who have committed the most grievous sins.” – Oath of Vengeance

While being sworn to the Oath of Vengeance, if you show mercy to the evil, you will eventually end up breaking the Oath. To do so, you can simply help Mayrina revive her husband or free Sazza in the cave.
