Ubisoft has reportedly abandoned its planned Far Cry PvEvP extraction shooter in favour of a completely different open-world game. According to a new report from Insider Gaming, the cancelled project was codenamed Maverick, while its replacement is now being developed under the codename Kodiak.

Project Maverick was reportedly designed as a standalone multiplayer extraction shooter set within the Far Cry universe. Earlier leaks described a high-stakes survival experience involving scavenging, hostile wildlife, weapon durability, safehouses, and PvEvP encounters.
Some previous reports suggested those ideas could become part of Far Cry 7. The new information, however, indicates that the extraction mechanics were primarily connected to Maverick, rather than the next numbered Far Cry game.
Following development problems, Ubisoft reportedly cancelled Maverick and began moving the project in a new direction.
Ubisoft’s New Far Cry Game Is Codenamed Kodiak
The replacement project, codenamed Kodiak, is described as an ambitious open-world first-person shooter where player interactions and player-driven stories will take centre stage.
While Kodiak is reportedly being built on some of Maverick’s foundations, Ubisoft is said to be leaving the extraction shooter format behind. The project only recently passed its conceptual stage, meaning it is likely still several years away from release.
The description suggests Ubisoft may be experimenting with a more dynamic Far Cry sandbox, where encounters between players create unpredictable stories rather than following the repetitive extraction loop originally planned for Maverick.
The next mainline Far Cry game is reportedly still in development under the codename Blackbird. According to the same report, Blackbird has faced several internal delays and development difficulties, although the project is now believed to be moving forward more smoothly.
Blackbird will reportedly include a multiplayer component that allows multiple players to experience its world together. However, Ubisoft has not officially announced Far Cry 7, Kodiak, or their gameplay details, so the information should still be treated as unconfirmed.
Die-hard fans of this franchise were concerned about Far Cry becoming another extraction shooter, but the new reported change of direction may come as welcome news.
