Far Cry has always been about handing you a gorgeous sandbox and letting you cause chaos at your own pace. A fresh leak suggests the seventh mainline game might throw that comfort blanket straight into a wood chipper. According to Ubisoft leaker Rogue I Tx, Far Cry 7 is shaping up to be one of the biggest swings the franchise has ever taken, and not everyone is going to love where it lands.

None of this is official, so keep your salt shaker close. That being said, Rogue has a track record with Ubisoft projects, and this latest batch mostly doubles down on claims the same source has been making for a while now.

A 72-Hour Timer Sits at the Heart of the Story

The headline detail is a countdown. The leak points to a strict 72-hour time limit tied to completing the story, with players racing to rescue six kidnapped family members from a faction called the Sons of Truth. This clock has actually surfaced before. Earlier leaks referenced a real-time ticking mechanic, and Rogue now says that limit has climbed up to 72 hours since the last time he checked.

A ticking clock in a Far Cry game is a wild idea when you think about how people usually play these things. The series practically begs you to wander off, climb a radio tower, get distracted by a bear, and forget what your objective even was. Bolting a timer onto that loop could push the story toward something more urgent and non-linear, which some fans will find exciting, and others will find stressful in a way they never signed up for.

Sons of Truth and the Family You Have to Save

The villains this time are a cult-like group known only as the Sons of Truth. The plot reportedly centers on a wealthy family kidnapped by this group, with the campaign built around saving up to six of them. If that setup rings a bell for horror fans, you are not alone, since the branching “who lives and who dies” family rescue idea has shown up in older cult classics.

There have also been longer-running rumors that Cillian Murphy could headline as the game’s main antagonist. That casting claim has floated around alongside the Sons of Truth details but has not been fully confirmed, so treat it as the spiciest rumor in an already rumor-heavy pile.

The Big One: Far Cry 7 as a PvEvP Extraction Game

Rogue describes Far Cry 7 as a high-stakes PvPvE survival experience built around scavenging, completing objectives, and extracting safely, with players forming squads and dealing with both AI enemies and other real players. In other words, think closer to Escape From Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown than the open-world playground you remember from Far Cry 6.

Before you panic completely, there is a saving grace. Rogue clarified in a follow-up that Far Cry 7 will still include a traditional campaign alongside the new PvE mode, so this may not be a full pivot away from single-player.

And this also lines up with earlier reporting. Previous leaks separated the projects into Blackbird as the mainline title and Maverick as a standalone multiplayer extraction game, and Rogue now claims many of Maverick’s survival and multiplayer systems have been folded into Far Cry 7.

It is worth remembering that Ubisoft has publicly leaned in this direction. CEO Yves Guillemot suggested back in 2025 that the next Far Cry would put more emphasis on multiplayer to build another long-running live-service game, which makes an extraction pivot a lot more believable than it might first sound.

Weapon Durability, Safehouses, and a Map That Bites Back

The survival systems keep coming. The leak mentions safehouses where players can change and maintain their gear, which matters a lot because weapons will reportedly have durability. Weapon durability is one of those mechanics that instantly splits a room, since some players love the resource management tension and others just want to shoot things without babysitting their rifle.

Then there is the wildlife. The map is said to throw grizzly bears, wolves, foxes, and deer at you, which fits the rumored Alaskan setting that Rogue has previously pointed to. Far Cry has always used animals as chaotic wild cards, so a snowy map full of aggressive predators actually feels very on brand, even if everything around it is changing.

Ubisoft has stayed quiet, and until the publisher actually pulls back the curtain, every single one of these details is unconfirmed. Whether Far Cry 7 becomes a bold reinvention or a cautionary tale is anyone’s guess right now, but one thing is clear. This is not the Far Cry your muscle memory is expecting.
