Riot Games has announced that active development on 2XKO will end in December 2026, bringing the fighting game’s regular development cycle to a close less than a year after its full console launch. However, Riot is not shutting the game down. Servers will remain online, and players will still be able to play 2XKO across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The company says 2XKO attracted a passionate core community, but not enough players continued playing to make the project sustainable. Riot confirmed that the game currently costs substantially more to operate than it generates in revenue.

In brief

  • 2XKO active development will conclude at the end of 2026.
  • The final major content update, Patch 1.3.3, arrives in October.
  • 2XKO servers will remain online after development ends.
  • Riot is refunding eligible purchases made before or around the August 20 cutoff.

2XKO’s Final Major Content Patch Arrives in October

Riot still has several updates planned before development officially ends. Patch 1.3.1 launches on September 8 and will introduce Lux while unlocking all champions for players. The update will also remove Ranked, Battle Passes, KO Points, seasons, and events as Riot prepares the game for long-term operation with reduced ongoing support.

The final major 2XKO content patch, Patch 1.3.3, is scheduled for October. It will introduce Samira as the game’s final champion and update the Ultimate Bundle with the remaining planned cosmetics. Riot may also release Patch 1.3.5 in December, although that update would primarily focus on bug fixes rather than new content.

2XKO Servers Will Stay Online

Importantly, this is not an immediate 2XKO shutdown. Riot says servers will remain available beyond 2026, allowing online play to continue. The game will also remain downloadable for free on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, while offline play will remain unaffected.

Riot will also continue supporting the 2026 Competitive Series through its final event in November, after which community tournament organizers can continue running their own 2XKO competitions.

Riot Games Is Refunding 2XKO Purchases

Riot has disabled new KO Points purchases and is beginning refunds for eligible KO Points and Starter Edition purchases tied to the August 20 cutoff. PC refunds will be returned through the original payment method, while PlayStation and Xbox refunds will be handled through their respective platforms.

The announcement marks the end of its ambitions as an actively developed live-service fighting game, even if the game itself will remain playable for the foreseeable future.
