The long-anticipated Mundo changes are coming, as Riot confirmed that they would be buffing him in the upcoming patch 12.22.
There are over 160 champions in League of Legends. And some of them were released over a decade ago. Because of it, Riot has to update them in order consistently for them to live up to the current standards.
Besides regular buffs and adjustments, Riot often opts for reworks if the champion is too outdated. The major rework is VGU.
VGU, or Visual and Gameplay Update, is a type of champion update where Riot Games reimagine a champion’s kit and the visuals. Furthermore, they also expand on that said champion’s lore as well.
The last champion to receive a VGU was Udyr. And even though his VGU was broken at first, it was a success, as regular players and Udyr mains enjoyed the change. But the champion who received a VGU before him was not as successful as him. And that rework was Dr. Mundo.
Dr. Mundo was released in late 2009. At first, he was a straightforward champion, as his kit constantly relied on him getting healed. Overall by current standards, his old kit was extremely underwhelming.
And then, on Jun 9, 2021, Dr. Mundo received his much-needed VGU. Even though the visual updates were top-notch, the ability to rework was extremely underwhelming.
Mundo’s abilities were completely identical to the pre-rework Mundo. And besides his passive, the rest of his kit could not keep up with the meta.
Recently, Riot Twin Enso confirmed all the Mundo changes that are coming in the future.

One thing to note is that these changes were listed a while ago. So these adjustments are subject to change.
Riot Twin Enso said they wanted to make Mundo more of a scaler. Furthermore, he will be relatively weaker in the early game but stronger in the late game. In that way, he will fit in the same role as Kayle.
If all the changes come accordingly, he might even become a menace in the late game, similar to Kayle and other infinite-scaling champions.
