The official name of Riot’s upcoming fighting game, Project L, has been leaked as Rift Rumble.

In late 2019, Riot Games released their 10th-anniversary video. In that video, they announced a lot of new games. The popular was Project: A, which was later officially named VALORANT. The other one that also garnered a lot of attention was Project: L.

Project: L is a fighting game set in the League of Legends universe, also known as Runeterra. It is supposed to be a tag team fighting game, similar to Marvel VS Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ. But unlike Dragon Ball FighterZ, it’s a 2v2 instead of building a team of 3’s and being able to play 3v3.

Initially, there was a game called Rising Thunder, a fighting game suited for the keyboard and mouse. Radiant Entertainment was developing it. As traditional fighting games were made primarily for controllers and fighting sticks, Rising Thunder aimed to revolutionize the fighting game scene, as the game heavily relied on combos and special moves with cooldowns. While this game was being developed, in 2016, Riot Games acquired Radiant Entertainment. Subsequently, the development of Rising Thunder was canceled.

But in 2019, it was confirmed that Radiant Entertainment has been in charge of making Project L.

Recently Riot Games has been filing multiple trademarks reports. With all these reports have one name in common, Rift Rumble.

Project L’s Official Name: Rift Rumble?

In their listing, Riot has trademarked many names, such as Intercontinental Rift Rumble, RIFT RUMBLE SERIES, WESTERN RIFT RUMBLE, PACIFIC RIFT RUMBLE, and EASTERN RIFT RUMBLE, just a name of few. These trademarks have one name in common, and that is Rift Rumble.

There are many speculations around this trademark. The first one is that it might be a Wild Rift tournament. This speculation can be easily debunked by looking at Wild Rift’s trademarks, as they have Wild Rift written in filings.

Another popular speculation is that this could be the return of the popular League of Legends tournament, Rift Rivals.

As Project L does not have any concrete release date, we can only speculate.
