Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will be a direct sequel to Modern Warfare 2. The game will be the first in the Call of Duty franchise to receive a follow-up release. All Call of Duty sequels previously came out at least two years later.
Modern Warfare 3 will continue the reboot campaign and have a dedicated multiplayer mode. A recent teaser from the official MW3 marketing campaign confirmed that the game will get 16 remastered classic maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on day 1.
Aside from these classic maps, Modern Warfare 3 will get 12 new maps as post-launch content. These maps will be slowly released with post-launch updates.
