Learn how to switch Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the newest JRPG by Atlus, developers of the Persona series. However, there are glaring similarities between Metaphor and Persona from the gameplay loop of battling and socializing to the dungeon crawling and combat. The influence of Persona, especially 3,4, and 5, runs deep in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Fans of the Persona series will feel right at home in Metaphor, especially with the various Archetypes.
Summon Archetypes transform the party member in battle, similar to activating Personas. Furthermore, there are 46 different archetypes in the game, each with different abilities. Your party members can freely swap between archetypes and each archetype can be levelled to make them stronger through new skills and abilities.
While some Archetypes can have a versatile skillset, each of them has a role to play in the party, whether it be offense, defense, or support. No one Archetype is outright better than the rest, although some are easier to use than others.
You’ll need to go through some trial and error to figure out which Archetypes suit your playstyle and best fit your party. Moreover, different quests and dungeons will call for different Archetypes. As such, you’ll have to switch between Archetypes very often.
In this article, we look at how you can switch Archetypes.

How to Switch Archetypes

Before you can switch Archetypes, you will need to clear the Nord Mines Dungeon and defeat Captain Klinger. This is part of the main story and happens relatively early on. Before the boss battles with the Captain, Strohl will unlock his Archetype, the Warrior.
After you’ve defeated Captain Klinger, you will form a Bond with Strohl. This will take you to More at the Akademia. There, you’ll be able to assign Grius an archetype, after which you’ll unlock the option to change Archetypes in the Menu.

To do this, open the Menu and go to the Equipment section. Then, choose the party member you want to switch the Archetype of and select the current Archetype.
Keep in mind that you can only switch Archetypes of party members you’ve formed a bond with. Moreover, you cannot switch Archetypes during a battle. So, make sure to prepare accordingly and not bring all offensive archetypes.
