Bungie is making clear investments in networking and security for Marathon, its upcoming PvP extraction shooter. These improvements are meant to create an environment where players can compete fairly, reduce cheating, and minimize the impact of connection issues. Marathon’s design is grounded in fairness and competitive integrity, setting it apart from many online shooters today.

One of the core pillars of Marathon’s security strategy is its use of dedicated servers. Rather than relying on peer-to-peer connections, Bungie’s infrastructure will host all matches on centralized machines. This gives the game full authority over critical actions such as combat and loot handling. By processing these actions server-side, the risk of players manipulating the game state in their favor is significantly reduced, creating a more trustworthy competitive experience.

Dedicated Servers for Stability and Fairness

Server-Side Authority to Prevent Exploits

Marathon is also emphasizing server-side authority for key game functions. This means the server, not individual players’ devices, decides outcomes for vital actions like firing weapons, picking up items, and interacting with the environment. Running these calculations on authoritative servers helps prevent exploitative behavior and makes it harder for cheaters to gain an unfair advantage.

Fog of War and Anti-Cheat Innovation

Another notable feature Bungie is adding to Marathon is a form of Fog of War. This system limits what information is shared with players’ devices, especially regarding the locations of opponents and items that should be hidden. By only sending data about what should legitimately be visible, the game makes traditional wall hacks and loot reveal cheats much less effective. The Fog of War concept, borrowed from strategy games, acts as another layer of protection against cheating by hiding information that players should not reasonably see.

Also, Bungie has taken a serious stance against cheaters. In their official statement below, they mentioned permanent bans for cheaters with no second chances.

We are taking a strong stance against cheating and anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances.

Disconnect Recovery to Support Player Continuity

Network instability can ruin a player’s run, especially in a high-stakes extraction shooter where progress and loot matter. Marathon addresses this with disconnect recovery systems. These systems allow players who lose connection to attempt to rejoin their session without losing all progress immediately. This is particularly helpful in competitive multiplayer, where connectivity issues would otherwise have harsh consequences. By smoothing over connection problems, Bungie can keep gameplay flowing without overly punishing players for things outside their control.

Taken together, dedicated servers, server-side authority, Fog of War, and disconnect recovery demonstrate Bungie’s commitment to creating a secure and fair multiplayer environment in Marathon. These investments help reduce cheating, exploitative behavior, and the frustration that comes with connection problems. Especially for players who value competitive integrity and fairness, these systems are a promising foundation for what could become one of the more secure extraction shooters on the market.
