Riot has officially revealed MSI 2021 schedule and here’s everything you need to know about the event.

After a year-long break due to the pandemic, the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is finally back in 2021. This time, the MSI is taking place in Reykjavík, Iceland, with a new format.

However, the defending champion, G2 Esports, failed to qualify for the grand event, and the VCS will yet again not be able to participate in an international tournament due to the travel restrictions related to COVID-19.

MSI 2021 Format

Last month, Riot Games finalized the MSI groups, where 11 of the best teams are divided into 3 groups. Due to the VCS issue, Group A now has 3 teams, and the rest of the group has 4. The group stage is a double round-robin for Groups B and C and a quadruple round-robin for Group A.

Rumble or stage 2 will be a double round-robin, while the Knockout stage will be a single-elimination bracket.

The whole event will be played on League of Legends Patch 11.9 with both Gwen and Viego disabled.

Here’s the format of MSI 2021:

  • Stage 1 (Groups)
    • Teams are drawn into three groups based on seeding
    • Double Round Robin for Groups B and C, Quadruple Round Robin for Group A
    • Matches are best of one
    • Top two teams from each group advance to Stage 2
  • Stage 2 (Rumble)
    • Double Round Robin
    • Matches are best of one
    • Top four teams advance to Stage 3
  • Stage 3 (Knockout)
    • Single elimination bracket
    • Matches are best of five
