Sony and Guerrilla Games are reportedly making major changes to Horizon Hunters Gathering following negative feedback from private playtests. According to a new Bloomberg report from Jason Schreier, the multiplayer Horizon spin-off is being rebooted, with its live-service component set to be removed in favor of a smaller, more traditional cooperative experience.
In brief
- Horizon Hunters Gathering has reportedly been undergoing a reboot since June 2026.
- Negative feedback from private testing reportedly triggered the overhaul.
- Guerrilla plans to remove the live-service component and reduce the game’s scope.
- The revised project is expected to focus on traditional co-op multiplayer alongside a story mode.
Horizon Hunters Gathering Is Reportedly Dropping Its Live-Service Focus
Guerrilla Games has been working on the reboot since June after the project received poor feedback during private testing earlier this year. The new direction would strip away the live-service component and transform Hunters Gathering into a more traditional cooperative multiplayer title with a story mode and significantly smaller scope.
The shift represents a major change from the version Guerrilla originally unveiled in February. At the time, Horizon Hunters Gathering was presented as a three-player co-op action game built around replayable hunts, character builds, a social hub and an ongoing narrative campaign. Guerrilla also confirmed support for PS5 and PC cross-play and cross-progression.
A second closed playtest was held from May 22 to May 25, featuring new Hunters, another playable story Episode, additional difficulty options and the Breakers’ Bounty region. Guerrilla said at the time that these early tests were designed specifically to gather feedback and improve the core experience.
Horizon Hunters Gathering Is Not Canceled Yet
Despite the overhaul, a recent report says Horizon Hunters Gathering has not been canceled. However, the project reportedly faces an important milestone later this year, with the team given until December to impress PlayStation executives with its next version. Some developers working on Hunters Gathering are also reportedly being reassigned to another project.
Neither Sony nor Guerrilla has officially announced the reported reboot. PlayStation declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report, meaning the changes should still be treated as unconfirmed until the company provides an official update.
