Everything you need to know about reducing Squalor and keeping your citizens happy in Frostpunk 2.
In Frostpunk 2, you have to build an economy from scratch. Doing this requires careful resource management, city planning, as well as passing certain laws.
In a world struck by a climate disaster that has resulted in an eternal winter, resources are few and far between. Moreover, you’ll need to build factories and quickly industrialize, to maximize your resource output and keep your economy floating.
However, quick industrialization, especially in this new world, can lead to a multitude of problems, pollution being one of them.
If you do not plan your city wisely, your citizens will have to live in Squalor, as a result of densely packed Industrial Districts. It is essential to combat Squalor to avoid Disease and slow population growth.
In this article, we look at what Squalor is in Frostpunk 2, what causes it, and what you can do to fight back against it and keep it at a minimum.

What is Squalor?
Squalor comes as a result of high pollution, which usually comes from Factories. Squalor can also come from not having enough resources to maintain your city.
Therefore, it is important to produce enough resources while making sure that your Industries are not polluting your city.
How to Reduce Squalor
District Placement
Firstly, you should take some steps to keep Squalor from going up in the first place.
This can come with smart district placement. Placing two districts near each other can have its benefits, such as increased heat.
However, placing districts such as Industrial Districts next to Housing Districts will make those Housing Districts susceptible to pollution, thus increasing Squalor.
Materials
The first requirement to having low Squalor is to have enough Materials to meet the city’s demand. A red bar beneath the Material icon indicates Material scarcity, which will increase Squalor. You can take the following steps to ensure that the city’s demand for Materials is met:
- Build Extraction Districts on Material Tiles
- Research and construct buildings that increase Material output in Extraction Districts, such as Sawmills and Foundries. They can be under the Research section in the Idea Tree
- Build Maintenance Hubs near Districts to reduce their Material demand.
- Explore the Frostland to find more Material.
Filtration Towers
Researching and building Filtration Towers in expanded Housing Districts will significantly reduce Squalor. They can be found under the Resources category of the Idea Tree.
There are two filtration towers you can research:
Filtration Tower | Effect |
---|---|
Moss-Filtration Tower | – Significantly Decreases Squalor – Unlocks the “Rapid Filtration” District Ability |
Ventilation Tower | – Greatly Decreases Squalor – Unlocks the “Rapid Filtration” District Ability |
Waste Management Facilities
Waste Management Facilities also significantly reduce Squalor. However, they can only be researched after you’ve researched both Filtration Towers.
There are two Waste Management Facilities you can research:
Filtration Tower | Effect |
---|---|
Waste Repurposing Facility | Extremely Decreases Squalor |
Waste Incineration Facility | Greatly Decreases Squalor |
Disable Buildings and Districts
As a last resort and temporary solution, you can also try disabling buildings that contribute to Squalor. These include production districts such as Industrial and Food Districts. Disabling just one building can reduce your Squalor from Significant to Slight.
