The Witcher 4 just got its first trailer, here’s everything you need to know about CDPR’s newest RPG.
CD Projekt Red just revealed Witcher 4 during The Game Awards with a cinematic trailer, showcasing the look and feel of the world. It also showcases a more mature Ciri, who is taking Geralt’s place as the protagonist.
Once again, CDPR strives to create a dynamic story driven open world RPG adventure and has described Witcher 4 as “the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.”
What we know so far is only the tip of the iceberg. There is much more news that we, and no doubt countless other fans of the Witcher series, are patiently waiting for.
With all that being said, below is everything you need to know about The Witcher 4.
The Witcher 4 Release Date
If you’ve watched the new trailer and are like us, you’re probably itching to get your hands on the newest installment of the Witcher series. It has been over 8 years since the last expansion of Witcher 3 after all.
Unfortunately, CDPR has yet to confirm any launch details, including the release date, as well as what platforms the Witcher 4 will be available on.
Moreover, the Witcher 4 has only entered its full production phase this year, so we do not expect it to be released in 2025 or 2026. As a matter of fact, we might not even get a gameplay reveal in 2025.
The Witcher 4’s Story
As we’ve seen in the trailer, you’ll be playing as Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter, in Witcher 4.
She played a pivotal role in Witcher 3’s story, which had three possible endings for Ciri, her becoming a Witcher, becoming the Empress, or dying. Obviously, the third ending is not canon, and it seems the Witcher 4’s story continues from the first option.
The developers have also stated that they are aiming for a more brutal and darker fantasy world. Ciri will discover that the monster lurking the world aren’t just the various creatures and ancient evils, but also the people inhabiting it.
The trailer solidifies this further. In it, we see a young girl being prepared for a sacrifice by the people of her village. Ciri intervenes and manages to kill the monster the girl was being sacrificed to. However, Ciri finds out that the girl is killed by the villagers anyway.
There are some smaller details we’ve also noticed. For example, Ciri seems inexperienced as a Witcher. We see this during her fight with the monster, as she narrowly manages to kill it using some new abilities.
You’ll also notice that she’s wearing a Lynx medallion, signifying she is of a different Witcher school to Geralt’s.
The Witcher 4’s Gameplay
The Witcher 4’s gameplay will be more of that of the Witcher 3. But the developers have stated, that the Witcher 4’s open world will give you even more leeway to make decisions and affect the outcome of the story.
In terms of combat, Ciri should play similar to Geralt, but fans of the series will know that she is more adept at magic than Geralt. As such, we expect her to incorporate magic more seamless into her combat skills.
What About Geralt?
The trailer showed no signs of Geralt, who was up to this point the protagonist of the Witcher series.
In the Witcher 3 ending, where Ciri dies, Geralt is also implied to have died. However, we now know that this ending is not canon, and that Geralt is still active during Witcher 4. Some endings in Witcher 3 include Geralt retiring with Trish or Yennefer. And we’re assuming that Geralt is living out the rest of his life in peace, while Ciri takes the helm.
