How does the Age System Work?

Each age captures a specific period of human advancement, and when you transition from one age to another, you can select a new civilization to play as.
Moreover, each age has its own win conditions, and getting a win will help you in the next age. However, each age functions as a fresh new start, and as you go from one empire to another in each age, you’ll build a unique cultural lineage.
Legacy Paths

Win Conditions in each age are known as Legacy Paths. Each of the three ages have four legacy paths. These are centered around Cultural, Economic, Scientific, and Military Victories.
Each legacy path will have a milestone for you to reach. Reaching a milestone while allow you to start a Golden Age for that legacy path in the subsequent age. For example, if you get a Cultural Victory in the Antiquity Age, you can start a Cultural Golden Age in the Exploration Age.
Once enough legacy points have been earned by all leaders, an Age Transition begins.
In this article, we’ve listed each Age in the game, what sets them apart, and their Legacy Paths (Victory Conditions).
All Ages
Antiquity Age

The Antiquity Age begins at the dawn of civilization, and you first decision is where to build your first settlement.
From there, you’ll begin producing basic military units and scouts, as you start expanding or defending your empire. Exploration in the Antiquity Age, however, is restricted to a single continent.
Research in the Antiquity Age is made up of the early technology, such as the wheel, irrigation, and simple ships.
There are four legacy paths in the Antiquity Age, Wonders of the Ancient World (Culture), Silk Roads (Economic), Pax Imperatoria (Military), and the Great Library (Science).
Legacy Path | Goal |
---|---|
Wonders of the Ancient World (Culture) | House 7 World Wonders in your empire. |
Silk Roads (Economic) | Assign 25 resources to your settlements. |
Pax Imperatoria (Military) | Have 12 Towns or Cities in your empire. Conquered Settlements count as 2. |
Great Library (Science). | Display 10 Codices in your Empire. |
Exploration Age

In the Exploration Age, as the name suggests, you can start travelling further. Moreover, you can research Astronomy and Cartography to unlock naval units that can enter deep ocean tiles. You can also master shipbuilding, which will allow all your naval units to enter deep ocean. Thus, you have the ability to settle in distant lands.
Furthermore, you can also bolster your military and defenses by researching castles, metallurgy and machinery. This allows you to conquer other settlements alongside building your own.
The Exploration Age civic tree also includes the Merchant. Using Merchants, you can create trade routes between your and other leader’s settlements.
Just like the Antiquity Age, the Exploration Age also has 4 Legacy Paths.
Modern Age

While the Exploration Age introduces trade and overseas exploration, Modern Age takes it further unlocking the railroad and air travel.
In this age, you can research steam technology, including trains, and air units, including military air units.
Modern Age is all about pursuing the legacy path you’ve been building up in the previous ages, whether it be Culture, Economic, Military, or Science.
Moreover, Modern Age has a strong focus on military tech and units as you progress through the research tree. Thus, whether you’re a peaceful empire or not, you’ll have to divert some resources towards war and defence.
