Destiny fans hoping that Bungie was quietly preparing Destiny 3 may need to temper their expectations. According to reporting tied to Bloombergโs Jason Schreier, the long-rumored sequel is not currently in active development, despite the franchise reaching one of its biggest turning points yet.
The update has hit the Destiny community hard, especially after Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service content update on June 9, 2026. Naturally, many players assumed that the end of Destiny 2โs active development could mean Bungie was preparing to shift resources toward Destiny 3. However, based on Schreierโs latest reporting, that does not appear to be the case right now.
Destiny 3 Is Not Currently in Production
Bungie is not actively developing Destiny 3 at the moment. While there may be ideas, pitches, or early discussions around the future of the Destiny universe, that is very different from a full sequel being in production.
Destiny has been one of Bungieโs defining franchises for more than a decade, and after years of expansions, raids, seasonal stories, and major live-service updates, many expected the next logical step to be a clean sequel. Instead, the future of the series seems much less certain.
Bungie Is Moving Beyond Destiny 2
Bungie recently confirmed that Destiny 2โs Monument of Triumph update will act as the gameโs final live-service content drop. The studio described it as a celebration of the gameโs legacy, bringing together rewards, activities, and meaningful callbacks for players who have spent years in the world of Destiny.
Players will still be able to log in and play after the update. However, the regular flow of new content is coming to an end, which makes the lack of a Destiny 3 roadmap feel even more significant.
The Destiny community has been pushing hard for a sequel, especially as Destiny 2โs live-service model began to feel stretched over time. After The Final Shape wrapped up a massive chapter of the franchise, many players believed Bungie needed a fresh start rather than another long extension of Destiny 2.
The situation also raises bigger questions about Bungieโs future. With Destiny 2โs active development ending and Destiny 3 not in production, Bungieโs focus appears to be shifting toward new projects and Marathon. Reports also suggest that the studio may be facing more internal uncertainty as it moves into this next phase.
Destinyโs Future Is Still Unclear
Jason Schreierโs report does not mean Destiny 3 can never happen. It simply means that, right now, it is not in active development. Bungie could still return to the idea later, especially if fan demand remains strong and Sony sees value in reviving the franchise with a proper sequel.
Destiny may not be over, but its future is more uncertain than it has been in years.
