Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is bringing DMZ back, and this time, it looks like Activision is treating the extraction shooter mode as a major part of the base game rather than a separate free-to-play experiment.

According to the latest reports, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode will not be free to play. Instead, it will be included with MW4, putting it alongside Campaign and Multiplayer as one of the game’s core experiences. That alone is a pretty big shift from how many players remember DMZ in Modern Warfare 2, where it launched as part of the broader Warzone ecosystem.

This new version seems much more focused, more persistent, and clearly designed to compete in the extraction shooter space that has grown massively over the last few years.

MW4 DMZ Includes a Forward Operating Base and Persistent Stash

One of the biggest changes coming to Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is the addition of a Forward Operating Base. This will act as a central hub where players can gear up, manage progression, and prepare before dropping into the exclusion zone.

The mode will also include a persistent stash, meaning the items players extract with should matter beyond a single match. That is a huge part of what makes extraction shooters so addictive. Every run becomes a risk. Every piece of loot has value. Every bad decision can cost you something.

With no hard wipes currently planned, MW4 DMZ seems to be leaning into long-term progression rather than forcing players to constantly restart from scratch.

No Free to Play DMZ Could Change the Player Base

The decision to include DMZ with the base game instead of making it free to play will definitely be one of the most debated parts of this mode.

On one hand, locking DMZ behind Modern Warfare 4 could limit the player pool compared to Warzone. On the other hand, it may also help the mode feel more premium, more polished, and less disposable. If Activision wants DMZ to be treated as a full extraction shooter rather than a side mode, putting it inside the paid package makes sense.

It also gives Infinity Ward more room to build progression systems around MW4 itself instead of trying to balance everything around a free-to-play model.

MW4 DMZ Will Feature 20 Squads of 3

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is reportedly built around 20 squads of three, creating a large-scale extraction environment with plenty of room for PvE encounters, PvP fights, and unexpected chaos.

Matchmaking will also try to prioritize squad sizes, which should help solo players and smaller groups avoid constantly being thrown into lobbies stacked against full teams.

The mode will also remove the plea for help system. That should make eliminations feel more final and bring back some of the tension that Extraction fans usually want from the genre.

Dragging Downed Players Adds More Tactical Revive Options

One of the more interesting new mechanics is the ability to drag downed players.

Instead of being forced to revive a teammate in the open, players may be able to pull them behind cover, reposition during a fight, or save them from a bad angle. It sounds like a small feature on paper, but in a mode where survival matters, it could completely change how squads handle pressure.

Dynamic Weather and a Living World Could Make DMZ Feel Less Predictable

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is also expected to feature dynamic weather and a living world. A living world with shifting conditions, unpredictable enemy movement, and changing objectives could make each deployment feel more natural. Activision’s official description also points to a volatile combat sandbox where weather, enemy encounters, and objectives can change the flow of a match.

The Arc Raiders Comparisons Are Already Starting

Many players are already comparing Modern Warfare 4 DMZ to Arc Raiders, and honestly, it is easy to see why.

Arc Raiders helped push extraction shooters back into the spotlight by focusing on tension, squad survival, unpredictable encounters, and meaningful loot. Modern Warfare 4 DMZ seems to be chasing a similar feeling, but with Call of Duty’s faster gunplay, military tone, and massive player base behind it.

The big question is whether MW4 DMZ can feel dangerous without becoming frustrating. Arc Raiders built a lot of its appeal around atmosphere and survival pressure. Call of Duty, meanwhile, is much faster and more aggressive. If Infinity Ward can blend that speed with real extraction stakes, DMZ could end up being one of the biggest modes in Modern Warfare 4.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is shaping up to be much more than a returning side mode. With a Forward Operating Base, persistent stash, no hard wipes planned, 20 squads of three, dynamic weather, and a stronger living world setup, this version feels like a serious attempt to turn DMZ into a proper extraction shooter.
