Embark Studios is changing how it updates ARC Raiders, and it sounds like the team is moving away from smaller monthly drops in favor of bigger, more meaningful updates twice a year. In a new development update, Executive Producer Aleksander Grรธndal explained that while the original plan was to keep ARC Raiders fresh with monthly updates, that pace has started to limit how ambitious each update can be.

Going forward, Embark wants major updates to feel larger, more impactful, and capable of genuinely changing how players experience the Rust Belt.

ARC Raiders Is Moving Away From Monthly Major Updates

When ARC Raiders launched, Embark planned to support the game with monthly updates. The idea was simple: keep players engaged, keep the world fresh, and give Raiders more reasons to head topside. However, the studio now says that the monthly cadence has become difficult to maintain while also building the kind of long-term experience it wants ARC Raiders to become.

According to Embark, the pressure of monthly updates made it harder to deliver transformative changes.

Major ARC Raiders Updates Will Now Come Twice A Year

Embark confirmed that ARC Raiders will now receive major updates twice a year. These updates are expected to be larger in scale and more meaningful, with the goal of changing how players engage with the game rather than simply adding a few new things on top.

Also, Embark says a dedicated live service team will continue handling the day-to-day side of the game. Regular live updates, balance fixes, bug fixes, store updates, and player events will continue, so players should still see ongoing support between the bigger seasonal-style drops.

Embark Is Changing The ARC Raiders Update Schedule

The reason behind the change is pretty understandable. ARC Raiders has grown beyond what Embark originally expected, and the studio now believes the game needs updates that are deeper and more deliberate. That means more time for progression work, economy balancing, fair play improvements, anti-cheat efforts, and other systems that affect the long-term health of the game.

New weapons, maps, and cosmetics are exciting, but the real staying power comes from whether players feel like the grind is rewarding, the economy makes sense, and the experience remains fair. Embark seems to be acknowledging that ARC Raiders needs more than just frequent content drops to stay healthy.

Frozen Trail Will Be ARC Raidersโ€™ Biggest Update Yet

The next major ARC Raiders update is called Frozen Trail, and it is currently planned for October. Embark says it will be the largest update released since launch, and the studio is positioning it as the first major example of this new update philosophy.

Frozen Trail will introduce a new landscape in the Rust Belt, described as the largest map in the game. It will also bring Embarkโ€™s most ambitious ARC Operation so far, including new ARC enemies with fresh designs and unique behaviors. On top of that, the update will include new progression systems, an improved Skill Tree, new weapons, items, instruments, cosmetics, and more.

ARC Raiders Will Start Exploring The Origin Of ARC

One of the most interesting parts of Frozen Trail is that it will begin exploring the origin of ARC. Embark directly teased that players will start uncovering what ARCs are and where they come from.

So far, much of the gameโ€™s appeal has been built around survival, extraction, scavenging, and the constant threat of ARC machines. If Frozen Trail starts pushing the larger mystery forward, it could make the world feel much more alive and give players a stronger narrative reason to keep returning.

A New Trader Is Coming Before Frozen Trail

While the next major update is still months away, Embark is not waiting until October to add new systems. Starting next week, the game will introduce a new Trader aimed at late-game players. This Trader comes from a nomadic tribe of surface-dwellers and is designed to help solve some of the problems players have been reporting.

According to Embark, many players are sitting on high-value items without a satisfying way to use them. Some are also struggling with stash space, while others are avoiding Expeditions because they do not feel rewarding enough or because losing favorite items and Blueprints feels too punishing. The new Trader unlocks at level 25 and will offer unique rewards, rare items, and cosmetics in exchange for high-value items.

Extra Stash Space And Expedition Vault Are Coming

The new Trader will also offer two important perks in exchange for high-value items. One is extra Stash space, which should immediately help players who are running out of room. The other is the Expedition Vault, a new feature that allows players to carry over up to five items across an Expedition.

Expeditions can feel harsh when players have to part with favorite items or Blueprints, so being able to carry over a limited number of key items may make the system feel less punishing. It is not a full solution to every late-game concern, but it sounds like a meaningful first step.

Embark Wants To Improve Progression And Player Goals

A big theme in the development update is progression. Embark says it has become clear that player goals are extremely important to the ARC Raiders experience, especially for players who love the game and want more reasons to keep returning to the Rust Belt.

The studio says some progression improvements simply need more development time than a monthly update cycle allows. That includes deeper progression across multiple areas, better ways for players to personalize their Raider, improvements to Trials, and changes that make the Expedition Project more rewarding and less punishing.

The shift to two major updates per year might sound worrying at first, especially for players who enjoy frequent content drops. But for ARC Raiders, this could end up being a healthier approach if Embark follows through.

Some Players May Still Be Frustrated

Embark also understands that this change will not please everyone. The studio acknowledged that some players may be frustrated by less frequent major updates, but said it believes the tradeoff will be worth it.

The studio also teased a larger direction for the gameโ€™s world. Raiders are currently facing an escalating ARC threat, but Embark says the goal has always been bigger than survival. Long-term, it wants players to feel like they are pushing toward reclaiming the surface.
