Apex Legends Season 29 is already shaping up to be one of the more interesting updates of the year, and a huge reason for that is the game’s next Legend. The character now being referred to as Axle was previously known through leaks by the codename “Overdrive,” and the latest early look makes it clear why that name stuck around for so long.

From the leaked visuals, Axle has a sharp cyberpunk-inspired design with black and purple armor, high-tech gear, and an aggressive look that fits perfectly with Apex’s speed-focused side. Respawn has not fully revealed the character’s final kit at the time of writing, so everything around Axle’s abilities should still be treated as leaked or subject to change. However, multiple reports and datamined details point toward a movement-heavy Legend built around sliding, speed boosts, and fast repositioning.

Who Is Axle in Apex Legends?

Axle appears to be the next new Legend coming to Apex Legends in Season 29, which is currently being tied to the “Overclocked” theme by community trackers and recent teaser material. Earlier leaks referred to the character as Overdrive, but newer leaks now suggest Axle may be the final name or at least the current name being used for the Legend.

Visually, Axle looks like a fast, stylish, tech-driven character. The black bodysuit, purple armor plates, sharp shoulder pads, and glowing energy pieces all lean heavily into a futuristic racing or overclocked machine theme. That lines up pretty well with the older Overdrive codename, since everything about the character screams speed, pressure, and momentum.

Axle Was Previously Known as Overdrive

Before the latest images started making the rounds, Apex Legends leakers had been calling this character Overdrive for months. That codename was tied to early ability strings and datamined references, including movement-based passive abilities called Enhanced Slide and Slide Control.

According to those leaks, the character was being built around improved sliding and high mobility, which would instantly place them in the same conversation as Octane, Horizon, Pathfinder, and other aggressive movement Legends.

The name Axle also makes sense if Respawn is leaning into a racing, vehicle, or machinery theme. Between the purple armor, the Overclocked branding, and earlier references to speed-based mechanics, this looks like a Legend designed to feel fast before players even touch the abilities.

Axle’s Leaked Passive Ability

Axle’s leaked passive has been linked to Enhanced Slide and Slide Control. Based on earlier data-mined information, this could allow Axle to gain more control while sliding or possibly redirect movement more sharply during a slide. Some reports have compared the idea to a grounded movement mechanic that could let players take sharper angles without fully relying on traditional tap strafing style movement.

That kind of passive would be a big deal in Apex Legends. Sliding is already one of the most important parts of the game’s movement system, and giving one Legend more control over it could make Axle extremely dangerous in close-range fights. If the ability survives into the final release, expect movement players to test every possible angle on day one.

Axle’s Leaked Tactical Ability

The leaked tactical ability is reportedly called Nitro Gate. While the final version has not been officially confirmed, the name suggests a speed-based utility tool that could boost movement through a placed gate or energy field. Pley’s report describes the tactical as a speed boost that accelerates sliding for the whole team, which would make Axle more than just a selfish movement Legend.

That would be an important distinction. Octane can already help teammates rotate with his Jump Pad, while Pathfinder gives teams zipline movement. If Axle can create a speed boosting tool for the squad, then the Legend could become useful not only for solo outplays but also for coordinated pushes, fast retreats, and mid-fight repositioning.

Axle’s Leaked Ultimate Ability

Axle’s ultimate is still the most mysterious part of the kit. Earlier leaks connected Overdrive to some kind of vehicle or shoulder-mounted device designed for fast repositioning. Recent reporting still describes the ultimate as a movement-focused tool with extreme repositioning potential, although Respawn has not confirmed the final version yet.

If the ultimate really does give Axle or the team a major mobility option, it could have a serious impact on both ranked and competitive play. Apex Legends has always rewarded teams that rotate early and take better positions, but a Legend who can suddenly change the pace of an engagement might be able to break open fights in a way that slower comps simply cannot match.

What Class Will Axle Be?

Most leaks point toward Axle being a Skirmisher Legend, which fits the character’s rumored kit perfectly. Insider Gaming also reports that Season 29 is expected to include a new Skirmisher Legend, along with map updates, Wildcard Events, and a Respawn Evolution Update.

A Skirmisher role would make sense because Axle sounds built for entry pressure, aggressive repositioning, and fast movement. Apex already has several mobility Legends in that class, but Axle could stand apart if the sliding mechanics are as strong as early leaks suggest.

Apex Legends Axle Release Date

Axle is expected to arrive with Apex Legends Season 29. While Respawn’s official help page says Apex seasons usually last around three months, Season 28: Breach launched on February 10, 2026, making early May the most likely window for the next seasonal update.

May 5, 2026, is the expected start date for Season 29, with a likely launch time around 11 AM PT based on previous seasonal patterns. The site also notes that Season 29 is expected to bring a new Legend, map updates, Wildcard Events, and other content.

Axle Could Be Apex Legends’ Next Big Movement Legend

Axle already looks like a character made for Apex players who love speed, stylish movement, and aggressive plays. The Overdrive codename, the Overclocked season branding, and the leaked sliding based abilities all point in the same direction. This is not shaping up to be a slow defensive Legend. This looks like a character built to move first and ask questions later.

If the leaks are accurate, Axle could become one of the most exciting new Legends Apex has added in a long time. Now, it all depends on how Respawn tunes the final kit. Too weak, and Axle becomes a cool design with limited impact. Too strong, and the Outlands may be flooded with purple armored speed demons on day one.
