Apex Legends was omitted from The Game Awards 2024 for the first time since its launch in 2019.
Respawn Entertainment, the development studio behind the popular Titanfall franchise decided to drop Apex Legends on the unsuspecting audience in 2019 without any prior marketing, which was quite unusual for such a big release.
Based on the Titanfall universe, Respawn crafted a careful balance of new ideas and popular battle royale mechanics to deliver a product that stunned the battle royale landscape. An intuitive contextual pinging system, characters with unique abilities, and the respawn mechanic made Apex Legends an instant hit among the player base.
Is Apex going downhill?
Over the years, Respawn made massive changes to the overall gameplay and balance of the characters to keep the player base engaged. While the concurrent player count remained healthy for the first few years, the game slowly started to display a painful decline since the start of 2024.
Controversial battle pass changes, massive cyber attacks during competitive tournaments, and an overall lack of new exciting content have impacted the concurrent player numbers. For the first time ever the player count dropped below 100k on Steam. At the same time, Apex Legends did not receive any nomination for The Game Awards for the first time since its launch.
‘Best Ongoing Game’ or ‘Best Community Support’ used to be the categories where Apex Legends used to reign supreme during The Game Awards show every year. Unfortunately, its omission means a gradual decline of Apex Legends from the public eye.
