Apex Legends is a battle royale spin-off of the fan-favorite futuristic first-person shooter franchise called Titanfall. Following its initial release in 2019, this sleeper hit became the most popular battle royale game on the market.

Respawn’s world-class first-person shooter mechanics, paired with hero-like unique abilities, made this title stand out from the crowd. On top of that, it was free to play right out of the gate. Meaning there was no barrier to entry.

As such, it quickly garnered a massive global fanbase. As with every other multiplayer game with a huge player base, toxicity became a major issue for the game. Since battle royale games require players to communicate with their teammates, Apex Legends has a built-in audio and chat system to relay valuable information to teammates.

Unfortunately, some bad actors would use these features to make derogatory remarks about their teammates. Even though the current chat filter system in the game automatically gives punishment to players who abuse others in voice and text chat, a more robust system might be coming very soon.

Chat Filter is Coming

In the recent patch 11.1 that arrived alongside the Raiders collection event, data miners found reference to files containing details about an upcoming chat filer system that would determine which players to receive text and voice chat from.

In short, players who don’t meet the criteria will be automatically muted. Respawn took This huge step to deal with rampant toxicity in online FPS games such as Apex Legends. The Apex community has been asking for this exact feature for some time.

As this leak is from a data miner, take it with a grain of salt since Respawn might not release it into the live game any time soon. That being said, it is encouraging for the player base to witness that Respawn is taking steps against rampant toxicity in their game.
