Following the enormous backlash, Respawn devs finally confirmed they’ll make some ranked changes in the upcoming season.
Apex Legends Season 17 was one of the most anticipated chapters of this highly popular hero shooter battle royale title. The developers introduced a revamped Firing Range, a new Assault Legend, “Ballistic,” and other QoL improvements, such as weapon mastery.
However, the most significant change was made to the ranked system. Season 17 underwent the biggest ranked overhaul in the history of Apex Legends. Instead of making little adjustments to the existing system, Respawn completely rebuilt the scoring system and introduced crucial parameters like hidden MMR, LP system, and bonus rewards.
The changes looked promising on paper, and the community initially thought it would finally make the ranked mode enjoyable to any skill level. But, as soon as the season began, people’s opinions about the new ranked system began to shift.
Respawn’s attempt to establish a new, competitive ranking system backfired by being too simple. As a result, the number of Masters in Season 17 surged like nothing ever witnessed before. At the moment, there are currently twice as many Masters than Diamonds in Apex. Hence, everyone agrees that something must change.

Definite ranked changes Coming to Season 18
SweetDreams, an Apex Legends pro from NRG, was the first one to demonstrate how bad the new changes were. Within 18 hours, the pro player reached Apex Predator with 0 damage and kill, a task which should be impossible in the highest rank of Apex.
After that, other pros and regular player base also started to notice the apparent flaws of the game, and everyone voiced their dissatisfaction with the new ranked system. And the devs have finally addressed the issue.
In a recent post from u/calummillar in the Apex Legends subreddit, the OP shared their discontent with reaching the Master due to the easier ranked system.
In the post, the Live Technical Designer of Respawn Apex joined in and explained that the Ladder Points the OP received was based on their hidden MMR. The comment was unsurprisingly showered with downvotes as the dev failed to see the point the OP was trying to make.
Nonetheless, after some back-and-forth comments, the dev finally replied, “You can definitely expect changes next season.”
Although the community wanted to see some instant rank changes in season 17, it looks like they have to wait until the new season kicks in. Hopefully, Respawn will be able to make the necessary changes that’ll make the ranked mode great once again.
