Riot announces much-needed nerfs for Aatrox, Maokai & Sett.
Aatrox, Maokai & Sett have been very strong picks for a few patches, both in League of Legends Solo-Queue and Professional Play. So Riot has finally noticed and is planning on nerfing them in patch 12.20.
Out of the three champions, Aatrox has been the most problematic. Aatrox has been one the strongest Top Laner for the last few patches, having a solid 16% pick rate and a massive 44% ban rate in Solo-Queue. Besides that, he has over 90% presence in this year’s Worlds.
Riot Games did try to balance Aatrox by nerfing Eclipse in patch 12.19, but it turns out Aatrox is still too strong even after the Eclipse changes. So Riot is planning a follow-up nerf for Aatrox in patch 12.20.
As for Maokai, he has been very strong as well, although not as oppressive as Aatrox. Riot has been trying to put Maokai back into the meta for a while. Starting with the Maokai mini-rework, he received a considerable amount of buffs to his jungle clear and damage. But as it turns out, Riot might have over-buffed Maokai. He is currently one of the strongest champions in Solo-Queue and Professional Play.
On the other hand, Sett has been very successful in Mid Lane, especially Solo-Queue. However, he does have some Professional play presence. Sett is very good against the current mid-lane meta and does not have many bad matchups. He is a good facilitator who can play damage dealer or tank, making him quite versatile.
Riot Phroxzon, the League Balance Team lead designer, recently announced the adjustments on his Twitter.

Patch 12.20 Nerfs
Here are all the champions getting nerfs on patch 12.20.
Aatrox Nerf
Passive healing reduced 100% of damage dealt >>> 80% of damage dealt
Maokai Nerf
- Passive healing reduced 4.5-12% of max health >>> 4-10% of max health
- R cooldown increased 120-80s >>> 120-100s
Sett Nerf
- MR reduced 32 >>> 28
- Passive adjustments:
- Regeneration reduced 0.25/0.5/1/2 >>> 0.15/0.5/1/2
- Right punch bAD ratio increased 50% >>> 55%
When will the changes arrive?
The Aatrox, Maokai & Sett changes will be coming to the live servers on Patch 12.20, Wednesday, Oct 19, 2022.
