You will be navigating a harsh environment that requires you to be resourceful and tactical if you are looking for food. Many players, including myself, suffered from not having food items in my early days.

That’s why, in this guide, I will discuss the most effective ways to get food in the Nether without running into any trouble.

How to Get Food in the Nether

While you can try many different ways to get food in the Nether, I have found the following options to be the most effective when I started out:

1. Try Dry Farming

Nether’s extreme heat makes traditional farming impossible due to the instant evaporation of water. However, there is a method called dry farming, which utilizes quick action so that crops can be grown on farmland.

This method requires speedy planting to prevent the farmland from reverting to regular dirt. Despite its tedious nature and slow growth without water, dry farming can yield crops for sustenance.

2. Farm Ruined Portals

The Ruined Portals are commonly associated with the Overworld. These broken structures also appear in the Nether. Scouring these flaming remnants can yield valuable loot, including food items.

Although the loot is random and non-renewable, the advantage is that all food items found will be golden, providing a hearty and filling meal.

3. Bring in Transplant Villagers & Animals

Bringing villagers into the Nether through portals opens up trading opportunities. Farmers and butchers offer various food items, providing a consistent source of nourishment. However, you must provide care and protection to the villagers from hostile mobs, ensuring a thriving trading community.

You can also tame and breed animals for meat. This can be done by creating animal farms in the Nether by bringing the animals through portals. This way is designed to burn animals with lava for instant cooking.

That being said, transporting animals through portals requires careful planning, and protection against ghasts is a must.

4. Become a Cocoa Bean and Berry Bush Farmer

Cocoa beans, planted on jungle logs, provide an unexpected food source in the Nether. Combining cocoa beans with wheat allows players to craft cookies efficiently. This alternative to traditional farming ensures a tasty and resourceful supply of food.

You can also plant berry bushes on dirt blocks in the Nether, offering a straightforward food production method. Unlike traditional crops, berry bushes don’t require water or farmland. Harvesting sweet berries becomes a reliable source of sustenance once bushes are transplanted with Silk Touch.

5. Wither Roses for Stew

Wither roses, dropped by the Wither when it kills mobs, can be used to craft suspicious stew. Although consuming this stew inflicts wither damage, it serves as a survival tactic.

Moreover, removing the wither rose results in a regular mushroom stew, offering sustenance without any adverse effects.

6. When Desperate, Eat Zombified Piglin

Defeating zombified Piglins yields rotten flesh, a consumable item with nourishment equivalent to an apple. Despite its 80% chance of inflicting hunger, consuming multiple pieces compensates for the health loss. Combining this method with gold nugget farming enhances its effectiveness.

7. Look Out for Baby Zombified Piglin Chicken Jockey

The rare spawn of a baby zombified piglin riding a chicken provides another avenue for obtaining rotten flesh. Although this occurrence is infrequent, the potential rewards make it a unique and valuable source of food.

8. Search for Mushrooms

In the Nether, you can find mushrooms in the Warped Forest biome. This biome is characterized by its blue and purplish color scheme, with warped fungi and warped roots covering the landscape.

Crimson Forest is another biome where you can find fungi, but it has a different color scheme with red and white. Both of these fungi can be used for various purposes, including crafting food items.

9. Farm Hoglins

The Hoglins are creatures that spawn in the Crimson Forest biome. They are hostile mobs and will attack players on sight. So be cautious when dealing with them.

They drop pork when killed, providing a source of food. It’s worth noting that hoglins can be bred by players using crimson fungi, which can be a sustainable way to get food in the Nether.

However, be careful as hoglins can be dangerous, especially in groups. In the unforgiving Nether, mastering these methods ensures not only survival but also a satisfying culinary experience.
