Microsoft is reportedly preparing to expand its backward compatibility program by allowing developers to release Xbox 360 games on PC. The move could make a much larger selection of classic Xbox titles playable across computers, handheld gaming devices, and the companyโ€™s next-generation Project Helix console.

The information comes from a leaked Microsoft document recently sent to developers. While Xbox has not publicly confirmed the Xbox 360 portion of the program, the company has already started bringing original Xbox games to Windows.

In brief:

  • Developers will reportedly be able to bring supported Xbox 360 games to PC
  • Games could run across Project Helix, Xbox PCs, and handheld devices
  • Publishers will control pricing and Xbox Game Pass availability
  • A gradual rollout is reportedly planned between 2027 and 2028

According to the leaked document, participating Xbox 360 games will be compatible with the next-generation Project Helix console, Xbox-branded PCs, and supported handheld devices.

Developers and publishers will reportedly choose whether to add their games to the backward compatibility program. They will also retain control over pricing and whether their titles are offered through Xbox Game Pass. The rollout is expected to happen gradually across next-generation devices between 2027 and 2028.

So, players should not expect the entire Xbox 360 library to become available automatically. Licensing agreements, publisher approval, technical compatibility, and expired music or branding rights could still prevent certain games from returning.

Project Helix Is Designed Around Xbox and PC Games

Microsoft has officially confirmed that Project Helix is being designed to play both Xbox console games and PC titles. The company plans to send early hardware versions to developers beginning in 2027 while maintaining compatibility across four generations of Xbox games.

Bringing Xbox 360 releases to PC would support Microsoftโ€™s goal of creating a library that follows players across consoles, Windows PCs, cloud gaming, and handheld devices.

Xbox launched its Backward Compatibility on PC program in July 2026 with four original Xbox titles: Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Digital owners can access the games on PC and handhelds through Xbox Play Anywhere.

If the reported Xbox 360 expansion moves forward, it could open the door for many previously console-only games to receive official PC releases.
